Cumberlands Score Four Unanswered to Advance to MSC Semifinals

Campbellsville, KY – For the second straight season the Patriots will advance to the Mid-South Conference Semifinals. This year the team took down Martin Methodist 4-1 in the quarterfinals to move on in the tournament.

Braces from Rodrigo Riveros and Sergio Infantes Castell propelled UC to the win. The multi-goal game marks the second time this season both players have scored twice in a match.

The RedHawks got the first goal of the game just over a minute into the contest. In their first offensive possession of the game, Martin Methodist had the ball on the right flank and sent a cross in that found one of their attackers who scored the goal.

MMC had a chance to give themselves the 2-0 advantage just a few minutes later in the fifth minute. They once again had the ball on the right side of the field and then played two short passes to an attacker at the six-yard box. He shot the ball, but Akililu Zambataro dove to his right blocking the shot to keep the score at 1-0.

Despite being down early, the Patriots stayed composed and scored on their first shot of the game. In the 9' Joel Drewery had the ball on the right side of the pitch, racing down the field. He sent a ball into the box and found the foot of Riveros, who one timed it into the net to tie the game.

Riveros would not have to wait long for his second goal and it was once again Drewery who crossed the ball into him. This time Hrannar Magnusson had the ball just outside the 18-yard box. He tapped the ball out wide to Drewery who crossed the ball in with his right foot on his first touch. The ball was sliced between two defenders to the head of Riveros and into the goal for the 2-1 advantage.

Five minutes ticked by before it became a 3-0 lead for the Patriots. Tommasso Ogliari played a ball into Infantes Castell, but it bounced to a Martin Methodist defender. Infantes Castell displaced the defender and then split the defense, putting the ball on his left foot. He fired the ball inside the six-yard box on the left side past the outstretched goalkeeper for the score.

A foul inside the box with under five minutes to go in the first half after a defender dragged Magnusson awarded UC a penalty kick. Infantes Castell lined up to the spot at the 42' mark. He slotted the ball into the right side of the net to make the score 4-1 heading into halftime earnig his eighth goal of the year.

Even with 13 shots combined by the two teams in the second half no more goals were scored. Zambataro had to make six total saves in the match, a new season high to keep the UC lead intact.

With the victory, UC moves on to the MSC semifinal match against Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday, April 10 in Campbellsville, KY. The matchup will be the second semifinal game of the day and is slated for a 4 PM start. Live stats for the game can be found here and live video can be found here.
