Gulf Shores, AL –
Lisa Voyles capped off a remarkable season with a national runner-up finish in the 800-meter race on the final day of competition at the 2021 Outdoor National Championships. Voyles earned eight points for the Patriots tied for 37
th place at the championships.
Voyles clocked a career-best time of 2:11.28 to notch her third All-American honor of the season and her first during the outdoor championship. That time was the Patriots second fastest time in program history only behind Shelly Schnee 2:11.00. During the race Voyles split a 1:04.42 to be in third place at the halfway mark, however, Voyles made a surge with 300-meters to go distancing herself from the pack and pulling away for the 1:06.87 split.
Voyles' national runner-up placement is tied for the highest placement at an outdoor national championship by any Patriot in program history tying Danielle Hoop-O'Dell's second place finish during the 2013 championship. The Danville, KY native is also the first Patriot since Shelly Schnee to earn All-American honors in the 800-meters. The freshman is also just the third UC runner to earn All-American honors at both indoor and outdoor nationals joining Hoop-O'Dell and Schnee.
Also competing for Cumberlands on the day was
Tristan Petrey in the pole vault.
UC finished in a nine-way tie for 49
th place on the men's side with six points.
