Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands Athletic Director Chris Kraftick has announced that former Patriot standout and current assistant coach Matt Daniel has been named the new head men's basketball coach Wednesday. Daniel becomes just the seventh coach to take the helm of the program as he replaces Don Butcher, who retired on Tuesday.

"We are excited to announce Matt Daniel as the next leader of our Men's Basketball program. I've watched Matt from his time as a student-athlete to being part of the UC coaching staff," said Kraftick.  "He has always impressed me with his work ethic and maturity and I am confident he is ready to take the reins of this storied program and guide program on continued success in the future."

Daniel was elevated to head coach after spending the past two seasons on the Patriots sidelines as an assistant coach for Coach Butcher.  During that span, Daniel aided Cumberlands to 41-18 record overall, including a 23-12 mark in conference play and a pair of NAIA tournament appearances.  In addition to that Daniel has been a critical part of UC's recruiting and game preparations.

"I want to thank you to Coach Kraftick and President Dr. Larry Cockrum for believing in giving me the opportunity to take over this incredible program," said Daniel.  "The program means a lot to me as they gave me a chance to be here as player, assistant coach and now head coach and Cumberlands has always had a special place in my heart and I look forward to opportunity to lead the program and build on this great tradition."

"Matthew has impeccable character," said former Patriots Head Coach Donnie Butcher.  "The University of the Cumberlands a is fortunate to him as their new basketball coach."

Prior to Cumberlands, Daniel spent five years as the head coach at Montgomery County High School.  Daniel was a stellar player for Cumberlands, where he helped lead them to a 85-44 record and advancing to three national tournaments.  Daniel was a two-time NAIA All-American Honorable Mention and two-time MSC first-team all-conference selection.  He is also a member of the 1,000 career point club as he finished his playing career averaging 9.5 points per game.

The Daniel era will kick off Tuesday, October 26, when they host Milligan in the season opener.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live video available here.
