Patriots Stifle Phoenix for Tenth Win of the Season

Box Score Lebanon, TN Kaylie Monday tied a career-high 20 points and five steals to lead the Patriots women's basketball team to a 73-67 win over Cumberland Saturday afternoon at Dallas Floyd Arena.  With the win in their first game in nearly two weeks Cumberlands improves to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
 
Monday tallied 12 of her team-high 20 points in the first half.  Kassie Monday added 18 points, two steals, and two assists, while Abbi Doulgas finished with 12 points and five rebounds.  Channing Lewis chipped in nine points and a team-high nine boards as Jaiden Cox provided a spark off the bench with a career-high ten points. 

Cumberlands struggled to get their offense going early as the Phoenix jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. The Patriots settled in an forced a pair of turnovers, while Channing Lewis netted UC's first three points of the game to cut the deficit to 6-3 with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter.   Cumberland hits a pair from long range to extend their lead to 12-5 midway through the quarter.  Kassie Monday added a layup and found Lewis in transition for another bucket to cut the deficit to 15-11 with 2:47 left.  Kassie Monday and Kaylie Monday combined for the Cumebrlands final four points of the quarter as the Phoenix took a 20-15 advantage. 

The Patriots came out strong in the second quarter as Abbi Douglas found Shelby Moore for a jumper on the opening possession.  UC continued to pick up the defensive intensity as Lewis and Douglas each made a layup to even the score at 21-21 with 8:42 left. The Patriots continued to push the ball as Douglas and Jaiden Cox each converted a three-point play in transition as UC takes a 27-21 advantage just over two minutes into the second period.   Cumberland cut into the lead with a 5-0 run, however, Douglas added a pair from the charity stripe to push the lead to 32-26 midway through the quarter.  Cumberlands extended their lead as Kaylie Monday notched five straight UC points to extend the lead to 37-29 heading into the break.

Both teams came out strong in the third quarter trading baskets until Cox drained a three-pointer off an assist from Moore to give UC a 45-36 edge with 6:01 remaining.  The Phoenix went on a 6-0 run before Kassie Monday hit from behind-the-arc to push Cumberlands lead back to six 48-42.  The Phoenix went on an 8-4 run as Kassie Monday hit a free throw in the closing seconds to give the Patriots a 53-50 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Kassie Monday scored the Patriots first five points of the fourth quarter, including a pair of layups to extend UC's lead to 58-52 three minutes in. The Patriots took advantage of opportunities as Kaylie Monday and Abbey Estes combined for four straight free throws to make it 62-54 with 5:42 remaining.  After a three-minute scoreless drought Shelby Moore stole the ball and in the ensuing transition Douglas scored her 11th point to extend the Patriots lead to 64-56 with 3:09 remaining.  UC continued their strong defense effort holding the Phoenix to just nine points over the final five minutes as the Patriots added six free throws for the 73-67 final.

Cumberlands outscored the Phoenix 34-20 with points in the paint and finished the game going 26-35 from the charity stripe.
