Lewis’ Double-Double Paces Patriots Past Running Eagles

Williamsburg, KY Channing Lewis recorded her second career double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds as the Patriots defeated Life 89-49 Thursday night on Randy Vernon Court.  The win extends the Patriots win streak to three straight as they move to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

In addition to Lewis' performance, four other Patriots hit double figures including Abbi Douglas, who finished tied with a team-high 15 points.  Sydney Dalton tied her career-high of 13 points and grabbed five boards, while Kaylie Monday tied her career-high with five steals and ten points.  Kassie Monday continues to get things done as well with 11 points and a game-high six assists.

Lewis took charge of the game from the tip-off grabbing an offensive rebound and putback off the opening tip.  Life (5-12; 1-8) went on a 9-3 run over the next two minutes to take a 9-5 lead, however, Kassie Monday found Douglas behind-the-arc for a three to cut the deficit to 9-8.  Two minutes later, UC went on a 6-0 run capped off by a Dalton triple to retake the lead 14-12 midway through the opening quarter.  After the game saw two ties and a pair of lead changes, Cumberlands utilized a 10-0 capped off with a steal and layup by Kaylie Monday to open their lead to 26-16 with 1:58 remaining.  The two teams traded baskets in the final seconds as the Patriots took a 28-18 edge into the second quarter.

Cumberlands came out with a strong defensive effort limiting life to 15.8% from the field and forced five turnovers in the second quarter.  Offensively, Lewis netted the first five points of the quarter to extend the Patriots lead to 33-18 with 7:01 remaining.   Cumberlands utilized runs of six and eight points to give them a 47-22 lead with 2:07 remaining. Kassie Monday drained a pair of long balls to aide in those runs before tallying a three point play a minute later.  In the closing seconds of the half Jaiden Cox grabbed the offensive rebound and found Chelsey Napier for the jumper as Cumberlands took a 54-26 lead into the break.

The Patriots continued their strong play in the third quarter as Douglas and Kaylie Monday combined for 10 of UC's first 12 points in the quarter extending the lead to 66-30 with 6:03 remaining.  Life went on a 6-2 run, over the next four minutes, however, Whitney Caldwell led the Patriots response with a steal and dish off to Casey Coleman for the layup making it 70-37 with 49 seconds left.

The Running Eagles continued to battle as they scored five unanswered points cutting the lead to 70-41 with 9:39 left.  A Dalton jumper coupled with a Destiny Haworth three-pointer sparked a 7-0 Patriots run. Both teams traded runs over the next several minutes until Coleman added a three-point play to make it 80-45 with 6:55 remaining.  Cumberlands closed out the game on a 9-2 run for the 89-49 final.
With the win, the Patriots have extended their home win-streak to five.  Cumberlands tied their season-high with 25 assists in the game and set a season-high 19 steals.
