Campbellsville, KY - The Patriots had four players in double figures with chances to win, but it wasn't enough as they fell to Campbellsville 102-92 in double overtime Thursday night at the Powell Athletic Complex. With the win, Campbellsville improves to 11-11 overall and 4-10 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 13-8 and 7-6 against the MSC.
Jahi Hinson and Steven Fitzgerald led the way for Cumberlands as they both finished with 25 points. Hinson went to his bread and butter in the mid-range to help him be effective to go along with nine rebounds, while Fitzgerald put on a show at the charity stripe, going 10-12 from the free throw line. Isaiah Payton and J.J. Ramey both joined the Patriot tandem in double figures with Payton registering 15 while Ramey netted 12 points to go along with four rebounds.
Cumberlands started off the more aggressive team, jumping out to a quick 9-2 with just two and a half minutes off the clock. Hinson proved big in the first few minutes as he had five of the team's nine points, while Fitzgerald added layup to cap of the run. Campbellsville battled back with a 12-5 run to give them their first lead of the game as they held a 14-13 lead with 12:37 to go in the opening half. The Tigers utilized a 10-0 run, that spanned nearly four minutes, to extend their lead to 26-16, however, the Patriots battled back with a 14-6 run to end the half. Austin Hall drained a triple, off an assist from Hinson, to spark seven unanswered points by UC as they cut the deficit to 26-22 with 4:57 remaining. Cumberlands continued to hit their shots from the charity stripe, hitting four more in the half to help them draw closer as they went into the hall down 32-29.
UC responded well coming out of the break and was able to tie things up two possessions with five straight points from Hinson. The game saw three ties and four lead changes over the next five minutes until Hinson drained a three-pointer and added a layup to put the Patriots back in front 46-41 with 11:30 left. Campbellsville went on an 8-2 run to retake the lead before Hinson forced a turnover and in the transition Payton laid it up to put Cumberlands back in front 50-49 with 9:06 remaining. The Patriots extended their lead to six points, 59-53, off a layup from Kahlil Davis at the 6:25 mark. The two teams continued to trade baskets over the next several minutes until Fitzergerald stretched the lead to 67-59 converted a layup with 3:41 remaining. The Tigers hit three straight three-pointers to take a one point lead, before the Patriots responded quick with as JJ Ramey hit from deep to put UC back in front 70-68 with 2:07 left. The game was tied twice in the final minutes of regulation as Ramey's three-pointer at the buzzer fell short forcing overtime.
The two teams continued to play each other even in the first overtime as the score was tied at 82-82 after five more minutes. The Patriots forced on getting in the paint with their three made fill goals of the period all coming in the paint with Hinson, Fitzgerald, and Ramey all making a basket. Campbellsville came up with a pair of timely free throws after Fitzgerald's bucket to tie things up and force a second overtime.
The Tiger's offense got hot in the second overtime and it proved to be too much for the Patriots to handle. UC did their best to keep up, but Campbellsville had found their stride and never let up. The Tigers were effective in the interior as all of their makes in the second overtime came inside the paints, helping lead them to the 102-92 victory.
Cumberlands will return to the court Saturday, January 29, when they travel to Georgetown, KY for face the Tigers. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
