Columbia, KY - Monday night's matchup with Lindsey Wilson did not got the way UC was hoping as they fell on the road, moving to 13-10 on the season. The Patriots were able to keep their counterpart quiet in the first half, holding the Blue Raiders to a 28.1% field goal percentage, but a second half surge by Lindsey Wilson led them to taking home the 66-49 win.
UC finished the game with a trio of scorers ind able figures with Jahi Hinson leading the way with 13 as Isaiah Payton finished with 11 while Steven Fitzgerald registered 10. Hinson got off to a quick start with 11 in the first half with five rebounds a three steals to his line as well.
Cumberlands opened up the game hot, going on an 11-1 run to help them grab the early lead. UC's focus on offense was to work the ball inside with four of their first five makes coming inside the paint with the lone outside shot coming from J.J. Ramey on a three-pointer that made it a 9-5 game.
The Patriots grabbed their largest lead of the opening half midway through the first stanza, leading the Blue Raiders 18-9 with 10:49 to go. After establishing their early lead, UC continued to look to pound the ball inside with two of their next three shots ending up as layups. The other was a three-point make by Hinson to give him nine in the early going and make it a nine-point game.Â
After grabbing their biggest lead of the opening half Cumberlands grew cold from the floor, allowing Lindsey Wilson to cut the deficit down. The Blue Raiders went on a 11-4 run over the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza to make it a 22-20 game heading into the halftime break. Their ability to work the ball inside proved imperative during the run with all five of Lindsey Wilson's makes being layups.
The Patriots fought hard in the early going of the second half, but still found themselves down with Lindsey Wilson outscoring UC 14-7 through the first six and half minutes of the final 20 minutes. The Blue Raider's defense proved to be stout coming out of the break and it helped them grab an advantage, leading 34-29 with 13:29 to go.
Lindsey Wilson used the momentum from their early half run to grow their lead out to double-digits, claiming a 39-29 advantage with 10:02 left in the game. Their lead would stay in double figures for the rest of the game, ballooning to as much as 19. Rebounding proved pivotal for Lindsey Wilson during the game and especially on their run as they out-rebounded the Patriots 47-31 for the game and 24-11 in the second half.
The Patriots worked hard down the stretch of the game to try to cut in the their opponents lead, going 3-6 from the field in the final six minutes while making six free throws. A three from Payton that made it 51-39 began to turn the tide for UC on offense with 5:45 to go. He was followed by efforts from Kahlil Davis, Kamari Kenemore, and Fitzgerald with Davis and Kenemore each had three points apiece the rest of the way while Fitzgerald had four.Â
Their late-game performances didn't prove to be enough, though, as Lindsey Wilson kept pace with the Patriots and finished off the game in front by 17.
UC will match up with Shawnee State next on the road on Thursday, February 3rd, before returning home to their friendly confines for the first time in two weeks to host Thomas More on Saturday.
