Columbia, KY – The Patriots women's basketball team had three players in double figures and outscored Lindsey Wilson in the second half but it wasn't enough as Cumberlands fell to the Blue Raiders 63-60. With the win, Lindsey Wilson improves to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play, while UC moves to 13-8 and 7-7 against the MSC.
Destiny Haworth led the way for UC with 20 points, including four from deep, while
Channing Lewis added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Kassie Monday chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and three assists as
Kaylie Monday finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
Both teams struggled in the early going as the two teams combined for four minutes in the first four minutes of play. Cumberlands netted five unanswered points, with three of them coming from the charity stripe to take 7-2 lead with 4:23 remaining. The Blue Raiders responded with a 9-0 run until
Kassie Monday connected with
Lillie Hall for a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 11-10 after the opening quarter.
Lindsey Wilson extended their lead to four to open the second quarter, however, Haworth converted a 15-foot jumped to cut into the deficit two minutes in. The Blue Raiders utilized a 9-2 run, capped off by a three-pointer to extend their lead to 23-14 midway through the quarter. A minute late Haworth intercepted a pass and converted a layup before draining a three-pointer to bring UC within nine at 28-19. Cumberlands closed out the half with four straight points, including a three from
Kaylie Monday to cut the deficit to 29-23 at the break.
UC opened the second half with
Kaylie Monday driving for consecutive layups bring the Patriots within four at 31-27. Both Kaylie and
Kassie Monday dished out assists before
Kaylie Monday forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession
Channing Lewis converted a layup to even the score at 33-33 with 7:17 remaining.
Kassie Monday gives the Patriots their first lead of the game with a layup at the 6:35 mark. Haworth hit from long range, before Lindsey Wilson converted three straight triples to take a 44-38 advantage. Haworth added a layup in the closing seconds as UC trails 44-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
Haworth and
Kassie Monday combined for the Patriots first eight points of the fourth quarter as UC pulled within two at 50-48 with 6:26 remaining. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until
Abbi Douglas converted a layup to bring UC within one, 54-53, with 4:25 remaining. Lewis added three straight from the charity stripe to put the Patriots in front 56-54 with 2:53 left. The two teams traded free throws before a Hailey Ison layup gave Lindsey Wilson a 59-57 edge with 50 seconds remaining. The Blue Raiders extended their lead to four as Haworth hit a three-pointer to bring UC within a point. Still trailing by three Lewis' three-pointer rimmed out, in the closing seconds, for the 63-60 final.
The Patriots will remain on the road Thursday when they travel to Portsmouth, Oh to face Shawnee State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
