Boelter's Brace Secures Patriot Win Against Shawnee State

Williamsburg, KY- Cumberlands remains undefeated in Mid-South Conference play after defeating Shawnee State in a tight 2-0 battle Saturday afternoon. Jayden Boelter recorded her third brace of the season, putting her in 3rd place for all-time career goals.

The Patriots took control of the possession in the opening minutes of the first half but were unable to tally a shot.  Shawnee State looked to get on the board first as Brianna Brudy got behind the defense for a one-v-one.  Georgia Martell came to the top of the 18-yard box to make a save and clear the ball.  From that point on, UC took five shots but couldn't convert as the score remained 0-0.  In the closing minutes of the first half Noah Paalman took a corner kick for UC and it appeared that Rita Aguye Cots scored the go-ahead goal, however, the Patriots were called for offsides, which negated the score.  Jayden Boelter put a shot on frame in the closing seconds, but the Bears keeper made a save, sending the game into the break tied 0-0.

UC looked to break the tie minutes into the second half as they worked the ball into the box, but Selena Barnett's shot was blocked by the Shawnee State defense.  Two minutes later UC was working the ball upfield as Amy Anderson got the run started and found Irene Medina, who pushed it forward to Laura Navajas.  After a couple of dribbles Navajas pass the ball forward to Jayden Boelter, who fired a shot just inside the right post for the goal giving UC a 1-0 lead in the 50'.  It's the fifth time this season that the Navajas-Boelter duo have connected for a goal.

Boelter earned her sixth multi-goal game of the season in the 56' to extend Cumberlands lead to 2-0.  Navajas forced a turnover in the middle of the field to give the Patriots a transition.  On the ensuing transition, UC got the ball up to Carola Fontan who pushed it forward to Boelter.  The Hebron, KY native split the defense and got past the Bears keeper before finishing it for the brace.  That goal was also Boelter's 46th of her career, which moves into third place in program history, surpassing Jamie Roberts who had 45 from 2007-2010.

Cumberlands continued to control the possession over the next 15' with five shots and three corner kicks but were unable to extend the lead. The Patriots outshot the Bears 17-1 during the contest, while securing their seventh shutout of the season.

UC takes the field again next week, Wednesday October 5th in a big conference match-up. The Patriots will face off against the reigning National Champions, Tennessee Southern at the UC Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7PM, after the men's soccer game.
