Fontan's Brace Secures Patriot Win Against Campbellsville

Box Score Campbellsville, KY- #4 Patriots women's soccer team stands undefeated in Mid-South conference play after securing a win against (RV) Campbellsville Saturday night. Carola Fontan earns her first brace as a Patriot to help propel UC past the Tigers.

Cumberlands made their mark early in the match with a goal in the first seven minutes. Olaya Blanco took a corner kick that curved towards the goal and found forward Carola Fontan. Fontan headed the ball towards the goal, where it tipped off the fingers of the Tiger goalkeeper and into the back of the net, putting the pats up 1-0.

The Tigers immediately fought back, putting pressure on UC's defense. Campbellsville got off three shots on goal between the 9th and 19th minute of the game in attempt to tie time the match. Goalkeeper Laura Vogt defended the goal and blocked every shot that came her way.

The Tigers were able put themselves on the board with a goal in the 24th minute. A ball off the head of a Tiger forward hit the crossbar and fell into the net for a Campbellsville goal, tying the game 1-1. In the remaining minutes of the half, the Tigers out-shot the Patriots 5-3 but the game stood 1-1.

Coming into the second half, UC controlled offensive possessions. In the 62', a slew of corner kicks came off the boot of Olaya Blanco and Noah Paalman in attempt to facilitate another Patriot goal but no shots found the back of the net.

The tie was broken in the 84th minute when Fontan recorded her second goal of the game. A free-kick from right outside of 18-yard box gave Fontan all she needed to help the Pats gain the lead. A ball off of her left boot sailed through the air and found the upper-left ninety to help secure the Patriots 2-1 win.

In the final five minutes the Tigers got off two shots but neither brought the game to a tie. On the day, Vogt had seven saves with only one shot allowed and UC outshot the Tigers 13-12.

With the win, the Patriots are now 11-0-3 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. Cumberlands takes the pitch again October 19th against Thomas Moore in Crestview Hills, KY.
