Four Players in Double Figures as Patriots Improve to 2-0

Beckley, WV – The (RV) Patriots women's basketball team had every player score, including four players with double figures as UC defeated Voorhees 98-43 Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Patriots close out the West Virginia Tech Classic with a 2-0 record.

Kassie Monday lead the way for UC with 17 points, six assists, and three rebounds, while Kaylie Monday tallied ten points, a career-high eight assists, five steals, and five rebounds in the win.  Channing Lewis added 13 points and grabbed seven boards, as Casey Coleman finished with a career-high ten points.  Lakin Burke had eight points and eight boards while Mackenzie Babb grabbed a team-high nine rebound. 

Cumberlands came out with a fast start scoring the first eight points of the game.  Destiny Haworth drained a three, while Victory Fredricks and Kassie Monday each added a bucket to put UC in front early.  Kassie Monday added four points and an assist, while Kaylie Monday notched a basket and an assists to extend the lead to 16-5 with 6:02 remaining in the first quarter.  Channing Lewis converted a three-point play to spark an 8-0 run extending the lead to 26-5 two minutes later.  Lewis and Lakin Burke combined for five of UC final six first quarter points to take a 32-18 advantage.

The Patriots strong shooting continued in the second quarter as Kaylie Monday found Whitney Caldwell for a three pointer to open the period.  The two teams traded points, before Cumberlands went on a 16-4 run over the final six minutes to close out the half.  The Patriots had seven different scorers on that run led by Kaylie Monday and Burke, who tallied three points apiece.  The run gave UC a 55-26 edge heading into the break. 

UC continued their strong defensive effort in the third quarter limiting Vorhees to eight points and 15.8% from the field.  Lewis got the scoring started in the period as she found Kaylie Monday for a transition layup on the first Patriot possession.  The Patriots went on runs of seven and ten points, that included a pair of three's from Haworth to take a 74-31 edge with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter.  Caldwell, Joy Kendrick, and Casey Coleman combined for Cumberlands final seven points of the period to help the Patriots take an 81-34 lead into the fourth.

Jaiden Cox opened the final period draining a three-pointer off an assist from Kendricks.  The two teams traded trips to the charity stripe before Burke found Cox, who hit from long range.  Brittni Allison recorded the Patriots next seven points to make it 96-43 with 2:24 remaining.  UC added one more bucket for the 98-43 final.   

Cumberlands shot 45.9% from the field in the game and 55.6% from behind-the-arc.

The Patriots will return to action on Thursday when they return home for their home opener against Simmons.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with live video of the game will be available here.
