Williamsburg, KY- The top-seed Cumberlands Patriots women's soccer team advances to the second round of the NAIA Tournament with a 4-0 win over fourth-seed IU Kokomo.
Selena Barnett garnered her first brace of the season, alongside
Carola Fontan and
Laura Navajas, who also notched goals during the match.
Both the Patriots and Cougars came into the match with respectable records. The Patriots, who went undefeated during the regular season, posed a 15-1-3 record on the year until today. They were able to take down the 14-2-3 Cougars to advance in the NAIA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
Cumberlands had control of the ball for the majority of the first half. The first goal notched for the Pat came off the boot of
Selena Barnett. Fontan sent a cross into the box which was defected off of a header from
Jayden Boelter to Barnett, who one touched the ball into the back of the net. A Cougars' defender attempted to block the shot but her foot just grazed the ball putting UC up 1-0.
Not to long after in the 21
st minute, the Patriots tallied another goal. This time, off the foot of
Laura Navajas, the programs assist leader.
Rita Aguye Cots crossed the ball into the goalie box, but it was headed away by Kokomo's defense. The ball fell perfectly back to Navajas, who sent the ball sailing past the Cougar goalkeeper and into the back of the net extending the Patriots lead to 2-0.
Cumberlands scored once more before the half ended. UC was awarded a penalty kick in the 29'.
Carola Fontan found herself on the PK line and booted the ball into the left lower ninety putting the Patriots up 3-0. UC made four additional shot attempts before the first half finished. When the horn blew, Cumberlands was outshooting the Cougars 12-0.
UC continued their dominance during the second half. In the 53
rd minute,

Selena Barnett came charging in and headed the ball into the goal.
The Pats finished the game leading in every offensive category. They outshot the Cougars 19-1, with six corner kicks. This is the Patriots 11
th shutout of the year, and it is only fitting that it came in the NAIA Opening Round. This was the first brace of the season for
