Patriots Conclude Season on Penalty Shootout in NAIA First Round

Dalton, GA – In one of the most evenly contested games of the season, #24 UC men's soccer team found themselves on the losing end of a scoreless game. Neither Cumberlands nor Indiana Tech were able to score in 110 minutes forcing the game to penalty kicks. The Warriors won the match and continued their season from a 3-1 scoreline while the Patriots bow out of the NAIA Tournament in the First Round for the second straight season.

Statistically the two teams were fairly even. UC outshout ITU but only 11-10 and 4-3 with shots on goal. The match was very methodical from both teams, with possession changing often between them.

In the first half, both teams had just one shot on goal. For UC it was Shuma Sasaki firing in the 33rd minute, but the Warrior keeper was up to the task. For Indiana Tech they had a chance early in the 7th minute, trying to test MSC Player of the Year, Pablo Vazquez, but he easily made the save.

To start the second half the Warriors had another chance on goal but once again Vazquez kept the game scoreless making a diving save.

One of UC's best chances came in the 76th minute from Stephen Appiah. A ball was crossed into the box and Appiah went up to head it but could not get a clean enough look and the keeper was able to make the grab. It was the last shot on frame from either team in regulation.

In the overtime period, Indiana Tech only had one shot and it was not on frame, going wide of the net. UC however, had a pair of chances in the second overtime period, in the final five minutes of the game. Cumberlands caught Indiana Tech off guard with their attack. Storm Hollensted shot the ball from distance and the keeper could not control the shot, causing the ball to fall out of his hands. Karl-Emil Andersen was crashing the goal and got his foot on the ball, but this time it was caught by the ITU keeper.

With the game still tied at 0-0 the match went to penalty kicks. UC went first, sending Gerard Liao up and he hit the ball with pace to the top of the net. However, he was the only Patriot to convert his and Indiana Tech made three of their penalties to win 3-1 and advance to the NAIA Second Round.

This was the third straight overtime game for the Pats and the second straight one that went to penalty kicks. In all three games UC only gave up the one shot and it was from from Indiana Tech, butthey did not give up any on frame in the matches. The loss ends the team's season giving them a 10-4-5 record on the season and a trip to the program's fourth straight NAIA Appearance.
