Georgetown, KY – Despite having three players score double-figures the #24 UC women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start as they fell to #18 Georgetown 84-73 Tuesday night at Davis-Reed Gym. With the win the Tigers improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 6-2 overall and 1-2 against the MSC.
Kassie Monday led the way for UC with a team-high 21 points to go along with six assists and a season-high seven rebounds.
Kaylie Monday chipped in 13 points and three assists, while
Jaiden Cox hit double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time in her career as she finished with 10 points.
Channing Lewis added eight points and two steals in the game.
Cumberlands jumped out to a 6-3 lead two minutes into the game behind baskets from
Kaylie Monday,
Kassie Monday, and
Victory Fredricks. The two teams traded baskets until
Kassie Monday drained a three-pointer to put UC in front 11-10. Georgetown went on a 16-4 run and took a 26-19 lead after the first quarter. The Tigers outscored the Patriots 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 43-29 advantage heading into the break.
The two teams traded baskets over the first three minutes of the third quarter as UC cut the deficit to 48-33. Two minutes later,
Kaylie Monday connected with
Channing Lewis for a layup, which sparked a 10-1 Patriots run, that included six points from
Kassie Monday to cut the deficit to 54-43 with 3:12 remaining. UC's final eight points of the period game from the charity stripe as Cox went 6-6 from the foul line, before Lewis sank a pair as the Patriots trailed 62-51 heading into the fourth quarter.
Cox opened the fourth quarter with a layup to bring Cumberlands within nine at 62-53. Georgetown went on a 13-2 run, over a 2:37 span, to take a 75-55 edge, however the Patriots continued to battle as
Kassie Monday and
Kaylie Monday combined for four straight free throws midway through the period. A minute later,
Brittni Allison found
Kaylie Monday for a layup, which sparked a 13-5 run over the next four minutes. During that run, UC went 5-5 from the field and four different scorers as the Patriots pulled with nine at 81-72 with :30 seconds remaining. Both teams added free throws for the 84-73 final.
The Patriots return to the court Thursday, December 1, when they travel to face (RV) Pikeville. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with live video available
