Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | UC Athletics

Overtime Goal from Ogliari Advances UC to MSC Semifinals

Williamsburg, KY – The first postseason game for the UC men's soccer team in 2022 proved to be an exciting one, needing overtime to decide the winner. #24 Cumberlands and Campbellsville were tied up 1-1, but it was Tommaso Ogliari who found the net in overtime to advance the Patriots to the Mid-South Conference semifinals.

As the trend has gone this season, the Pats outshot their opponent this time 20-6, with seven shots on frame compared to the Tigers who had four.

Despite outshooting CU it was the Tigers who got on the scoresheet first. 29 minutes into the match, Campbellsville got a corner kick on the left side. The ball was sent into the box and a header placed the ball into the net for the early 1-0 lead.

UC fired eight shots in the first half, however none of them came on frame, leaving them down at the break. Then the Patriots came out of the second half with urgency and it paid off with a goal. In the 63', Alejandro Gonzalez Salinas had the ball on the right flank with two defenders on him. He cut back the ball at the 18-yard box and sent in a cross to the far post. Shuma Sasaki laid out for the ball. He got his left leg to the ball and sent it across the net into the goal to tie up the game, 1-1.

Not even a minute later, the Tigers had their own chance with the ball in the box, but Pablo Vazquez was up for the task, making one of his three saves in the game. He had to make another save with just three minutes in the second half, this time a basket catch from a shot at the edge of the box. His save kept the game level and forced it into overtime.

The Patriots wasted little time in finding the go-ahead goal in the extra period, scoring in 95th minute. UC was on the attack and a poor clearance by the Tigers sent the ball right to Ogliari, 20 yards out. On Ogliari's third touch he sailed the ball to the far netting, past the diving keeper for his second goal in two games.

With the new rules this season, Ogliari's goal to make it 2-1 in favor of UC was not a golden goal and both overtime periods had to be played out. The full extra 20 minutes was all Cumberlands, not allowing Campbellsville to record a shot in either period.

The win advances the Patriots to the MSC semifinals for the fourth straight season. Both the semifinals and finals games will be played at UT-Southern since they won the MSC regular season.

Cumberlands will next face Bethel on Wednesday, November 9 with a kick-off time TBA. The game will take place in Pulaski, TN at UT-Southern's soccer field.
