O'Brian Black takes home his first MSC Wrestler of the Week honor this season after going 3-0 at the Fire Duals.
Black was the starter in the 165-weight class for the Pats and had a fantastic weekend taking down two ranked opponents. The junior from Helena, AL notched all three wins by decision. Black started the weekend with an 8-2 win over Izac Martinez of the 3rd-ranked Southeastern. Black notched his first points in the second period in that match with a takedown. Then in the third period, he got an escape followed by two takedowns and an extra point for ride time. In the next dual against 15th-ranked Reinhardt, Black took down eighth-ranked Matt Jenkins in a 10-6 decision. Black opened the match with two takedowns and an escape. In the second period, he notched another escape, followed by another two takedowns for the 10-5 lead. Black's weekend ended with an 8-5 win over 22nd-ranked Bridger Hall of 10th-ranked Providence. After a stalemate in the first period, Black notched the first point with an escape followed by a takedown. He got another escape right before the period ended as well. Then in the final period, he notched two takedowns to go on and win.
Black is now 8-0 on the season, with all eight wins coming by decisions. In December, Black is 6-0. Cumberlands ended the 2022 portion of the season with a 2-5 record. 2023 will start with the NAIA/ NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals on the 6
th and 7
th of January in Louisville, KY.
