UC Advances to NAIA Semi-Finals

Orange Beach, AL- The #3 Patriots secure a 2-1 win over #6 Oklahoma Wesleyan to advance to the semi-final round of the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in program history. Selena Barnett notched both of the Patriot goals marking her second brace of the season.

Oklahoma Wesleyan came into the match with an undefeated record of 22-0-1 and had previously allowed only four goals the entire season. The Patriots were able to put up two goals against the sixth-seed in the final quarter-round match and knock them out of the tournament.

During the first half, the Patriots and the Eagles batted back and forth, sharing possessions and working hard to garner the first goal. The Eagles were able to knock one in during the 34th minute, making the score 1-0.

UC was quick to respond with a goal from Selena Barnett just four minutes later. After receiving a perfect pass from Carola Fontan, Barnett two-touched the ball and sent the ball flying into the back of the Eagles' net off of her left boot. The senior's goal tied the game 1-1 with seven minutes left in the first half.

Cumberlands continued to fight throughout the second half, but the Oklahoma Wesleyan was not ready to give up. The Eagles were able to get nine shots off, four of which were on goal. With tension rising and the game coming to a close, Barnett was able to find the back of the net once more.

In the 85th minute, the senior received another pass from Fontan but this time she responded with a header that sailed into the left side of the goal. This marked her fifth goal and second brace of the 2022 season. The Carmel, IN first brace of the season came in the first round of the NAIA Tournament as she finished with a pair of goals in UC's win over IU Kokomo.  Laura Navajas set up the play for her tenth assists on the season, which was also the senior captain's 42nd career assist.

Georgia Martell made a season-high nine saves in the win, including four in the second half to keep Oklahoma Wesleyan scoreless over the final 45 minutes.

Despite being outshot 17-13, UC takes home their 18th win of the season bringing their overall record to 18-1-3. The Pats will take the pitch again on Saturday, December 3rd and face off against the #2 seed Marian. The two teams will be meeting for the second time this season, after tying 0-0 on August 23rd
