Patriots Tame Lions Behind Strong Efforts on Both Ends of the Court

Williamsburg, KY – The (RV) Cumberlands women's basketball team used an 11-point run in the third quarter to break open the game and defeat Bryan 83-68 Friday night on Randy Vernon Court.  With the win, UC closes out their non-conference schedule 5-0 and improve to 12-3 overall on the season.

Kassie Monday led the way for the Patriots with 27 points, tied her career-high with nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals.  Amerah Steele added 19 points, three rebounds, and four steals in her Patriot debut, while Channing Lewis added 10 points and five boards.  Kaylie Monday grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and notched three steals and a pair of assists.

Cumberlands jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead with four different Patriots scoring including a three-point play from Kassie Monday over the first three minutes of action.  Lewis added a putback before Monday laid up another bucket pushing the lead to 13-4 with 5:39 remaining.  Bryan went on an 10-2 run over the next two minutes to pull within a point, however, Monday found Lakin Burke under the basket for a three-point play.  Cumberlands closed out the first half on an 8-4 run to take a 26-18 advantage.

The Lions opened the second quarter with four straight points before Victory Fredricks tallied a putback to spark an 8-2 run, extending the lead to 34-24 midway through the period.  Bryan cut the lead to 37-32 before Kassie Monday found Brittni Allison in the corner for a three-pointer to close out the half with UC in front 40-32.

The two teams traded baskets to open the third quarter however an 11-0 Patriot run put UC in front 53-37 with 5:08 remaining.  Kaylie Monday sparked the run with a three-pointer, while Lewis, Steele, and Monday each added buckets.  The two teams traded points over the next two minutes as Kassie Monday added five straight Cumberlands points before Lewis connected with Steele for a three making it 65-49 with 1:10 remaining. 

Bryan went on a 6-0 run to pull within ten points just over a minute into the fourth quarter.  After UC added four from the charity stripe, Steele netted five straight points making it 74-58 with 6:32 remaining.  That sparked a 12-0 run in which Casey Coleman and Destiny Haworth aided to extend the lead to 81-58 with 3:50 left.  Bryan closed out the game on a 10-2 run for the 83-68 final.

Cumberlands tallied 13 steals in the win, which was the most since November 19, while their 12 turnovers were the fewest all season.  UC also converted 14-16 from the charity stripe.
