Richmond, KY – For the third time this season the Cumberlands men's tennis teams broke out the brooms as they defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene University 7-0 Friday afternoon at the EKU Tennis Courts. With the win, the Patriots improve to 5-2 on the year, while the Cougars move to 1-11 on the year.
UC gained the advantage with a win in doubles play, winning all three matches in convincing fashion. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub played as the #1 tandem and did their jobs in taking care of MVNU's Carter Jones and Andrew Hare by a final of 6-2. Hung-Ju Wu and Martin Muller secured the win as #2 doubles with a 6-0 win, while Luis Montull and Mattis Le Montagner followed suit in a 6-0 sweep of their match as the #3 Patriot duo. The doubles sweep gave UC a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Singles play ended up playing very similar as UC was in complete control of every match. Barbier made quick work of his counterpart at #1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win to make it a 2-0 lead for Cumberlands. That quickly became 3-0 with Le Montagner defeating the Cougar's Ben Kindberg in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
UC's strong performance carried on with Muller at #3 singles taking home a 6-2, 6-1 win with Christian de la Fuente Nodado making it a 5-0 advantage at #4 before Hung-Ju Wu kept the ball rolling for the Patriots with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the #5 spot.
Singles play was capped off with as strong of a performance the Patriots could have hoped for from Pierluigi Cruypenninck. The native of France made his season debut for UC in this match and he did not disappoint, grabbing the win over MVNU's Ryan Wolfe. Pierluigi was as dominant in his match as he could have hoped for as he did not allow a single point to be scored against him, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
The Patriots will look to use the momentum from this match to help carry them to another win on the weekend. They're set to resume play on Sunday, February 13th, against Midway in Richmond, KY with that contest set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
