Williamsburg, KY – The second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team had 14 players record a point, as UC records 26 draw controls and 38 ground balls in the 26-0 win over Brenau Tuesday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Golden Tigers move to 0-3 on the year.
Stephanie Meyer led the way for UC with three goals and five assists to go along with five ground balls.
Aleyah Belton and
Bella Ricchiazzi notched six points apiece, while
Katie Wharton,
Morgan Terpstra, and
Reegan Hensley notched four points each. Wharton and Ricchiazzi also achieved career milestones in the game with Wharton tallying her 150
th career point as Ricchiazzi dished out her 100
th career assist.
Christina Min scooped a career-high 12 draw controls and three ground balls, while
Trinity Brown added seven draw controls, five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Morgan Tate and
Erin Bryant added three caused turnovers apiece. In her first career start
Mia Bosah made one save to earn the win and her first career shutout.
It was all Cumberlands in the first quarter as they recorded all ten draw controls and outshot Brenau 17-0 in the opening period. Just over a minute into the game,
Rachel Leigh found Ricchiazzi cutting towards the cage for the first goal of the contest.
Stephanie Meyer followed it up with an assist to Wharton, 30 seconds later. That goal was Wharton's 150
th point of her career and moves her into fifth place in program history. UC added four goals over the next five minutes, including a goal and an assists from
Brooke Ollerenshaw to extend the lead to 6-0 with 3:48 left. Tate added her first collegiate goal, before Terpstra notched her second goal of the game and of her career as UC takes a 10-0 lead after the opening quarter.
Brown won the opening draw control of the second quarter and on the ensuing possession Ricchiazzi found Belton for a goal extending the lead to 11-0. Cumberlands added two more goals before
Carolina Johnson put a well-placed shot into the cage to make it 14-0 with 6:41 left. The Patriots defense continued to crack down holding Brenau 0-9 on clear opportunities in the quarter, while Belton converted a free position opportunity to give UC a 15-0 lead at the break.
Cumberlands strong play continued in the third quarter as Meyer found Ricchiazzi for a goal five minutes into the period. The two teams traded possession throughout the next eight minutes with neither team able to convert. Brenau's best opportunity came on a Hannah Gray free position opportunity, however Bosah made the save to keep the Golden Tigers off the board. A minute later, Tate forced a turnover, scooped a ground ball, and found Min for a goal to make it 17-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Min won the first seven draw controls of the fourth quarter as the Patriots dominated the possession. UC added three goals, including one from Brown to extend the lead to 20-0 with 10:02 left. On the next possession, Ricchiazzi found in front of the cage for a goal. That assists was Ricchiazzi's 100 career assists making her just the second Patriot to reach that feat. Hensley added a pair of goals as Trepstra completed her hat trick for the 26-0 final.
It marks Cumberlands sixth shutout in program history and the first this season. UC's 17 assists, 26 draw controls and 38 ground balls all ranked second in program history in a game.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday, February 18, when they travel to Southfield, MI to face fourth-ranked Lawrence Tech. The game is slated to begin at 8 p.m.
