Lawrenceville, GA – Facing their fifth ranked opponent of the season, the UC men's tennis team came up short falling to tenth-ranked Xavier 4-0 Friday night at the Grizzly Invite hosted by Georgia Gwinnett. After the match UC moves to 6-3 on the season.
The opening match of doubles play proved to be a battle with UC just missing out on the win. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub teamed up at the #1 spot for Cumberlands and did all they could to pull out the win, but it was not meant to be as they were defeated 7-5. Luis Montull and Mattis Le Montagner met the same fate at #2 doubles, dropping their matchup with Megh Patel and Jacobi Bain 6-2 to give Xavier the first point. Hung-Ju Wu and Martin Muller were able to help salvage doubles play in the #3 spot with a 6-3 victory, giving the Patriots some confidence moving into their singles matches.
In singles play, Mattis Le Montagner suffered the first defeat at #2 singles in 6-1, 6-3 fashion to give the Gold Rush a 2-0 lead. Luis Montull ended up falling at #4 singles in similar fashion as he was beaten by Jacobi Bain 6-2, 6-3 to make it 3-0, while Xavier posted a straight set win at #6 to clinch the match.
UC battled as Barbier, Muller, and Christian de la Fuente Nodado each taking a set in their contests, however, their matches was halted during the second set.
UC will look to finish off their time at the Grizzly Open on a high note tomorrow as they're set to take on another tough task in #5 Reinhardt. Cumberlands will see their contest with the Eagles begin Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
