Lawrenceville, GA – Facing their second straight top-ten ranked opponent UC won four singles matches to knock off fifth-ranked Reinhardt 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Grizzly open. Cumberlands recorded their third win in four tries and improves to 7-3 overall.
Doubles play began with a win for UC as Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub grabbed the win at #1 doubles 6-3 over Jordi Puig Molina and Federico Gomez. The Eagles battled to even things up at the #2 spot, before Hung-Ju Wu and Martin Muller knocked off Jaidan Watts and Joe Herin 6-2 to clinch the point for UC. Cumberlands #3 doubles tandem has won four straight and improves to 5-1 on the year.
Barbier made it a 2-0 lead for the Patriots with his win over Federico Gomez with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 singles. UC's strong play continued at #4 singles as Luis Montull posted a straight sets win, 6-1, 5-7 to make it 3-0.
Reinhardt got on the board with a straight set win at #3 doubles cutting the lead to 3-1, however the Patriots responded with a pair of points. At #2 singles, Le Montagner took the first set 6-3, before dropping the second set to 27th-ranked Jodi Puig Molina. In the decisive third set, Le Montagner rallied for a 6-3 win to take the point and clinch the match for UC.
Christian de la Fuente Nodado added on to the win for Cumberlands with a win at #5 singles, making it a 5-1 count in favor of the Patriots. After dropping the first set 6-2, Nodado went on a run in the second and third as he won each by a final tally of 6-4. The match was rounded out with Reinhardt grabbing the win in the #6 singles for the 5-2 final.
The Patriots will look to grab their eight win of the season when they take on Midland University on March 5th. Cumberlands' matchup with the Warriors will serve as their home opener as UC is set to host Midland at the UC Tennis Complex starting at 1:00 p.m.
