Monday’s Career-High Not Enough as Patriots Fall to UPIKE

Williamsburg, KY – Kassie Monday netted a career-high 27 points, however it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to Pikeville 82-73, Monday night at Randy Vernon Court.  With the win the  Bears improves to 14-10 overall and 8-9 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 15-10 overall and 9-8 against the MSC.

Monday's performance included 18 points and five rebounds in the fourth quarter.  Kaylie Monday chipped in 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Destiny Haworth netted 11 points.  Channing Lewis grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with seven points. 

The Patriots came out strong opening the game on a 7-0 run, that was capped off by a three pointer from Haworth at the 7:53 mark.  Pikeville scored six unanswered to pull within one, however, Kaylie Monday drained a three pointer to put UC in front 10-6 with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter.  A minute late Kassie Monday drove and finished with left to extend UC's lead to 12-8.  The Bears went on a 7-2 run to take a 15-14 advantage, their first lead of the game, with a minute left in the opening period.  In the closing seconds of the period Sydney Dalton drained a three-pointer from the corner to put UC back in front 19-18.

Haworth added her second three-pointer to open the second quarter and extend the lead to 22-18.  The two teams traded baskets as Kassie Monday drained a triple before dishing out to Douglas for a layup to put the Patriots in front 27-22 with 7:54 remaining.  UPIKE went on a 15-3 run, over the span of four minutes, to take a 37-30 lead in the second quarter.  Cumberlands battled back with six unanswered, including four from Kaylie Monday go pull within a point at 37-36.  Haworth drained her third triple of the half, however, Pikeville added a layup late to take a 42-39 lead into the break.

Cumberlands came out in the third quarter and clamped down on the defensive end of the floor, however, the Patriots went cold from the floor as all three points came courtesy of the free-throw line as Pikeville extend their lead to 50-42 with 4:19 remaining. UC scored four straight to make it 50-46, before, the two teams traded baskets as the Bears took a 59-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

The two teams traded free throws to open the fourth quarter until Kaylie Monday kicked it out to Douglas for three from the wing to cut the deficit to 63-55 with 7:23 left.  The Bears added back-to-back layups before Kassie Monday added a layup of her own to cut it to 67-57 with 5:41 remaining.  Kassie Monday scored the next 12 Patriot points, however, Pikeville continue to match basket for basket to have a 79-69 edge with 1:05 remaining.  Shelby Moore stole the ensuing in-bound pass and Kaylie Monday laid it up to cut the deficit to 79-71 with a minute left.  Kassie Monday added a layup in the final seconds as Pikeville holds on for the 82-73 final.

The Patriots will return to the court Thursday, February 10, when they host Cumberland. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
