Williamsburg, KY – The score was tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the 10
th between #17 Cumberlands and #20 Milligan. With runners on second and third, no outs,
Hailey Wood stepped to the dish. She floated the ball in between the second baseman and right fielder letting it drop in for a base hit. The single allowed
Taylor Green to score from third, giving UC their first extra innings win of the season.
All three pitchers of
Kaiti White,
Talli Burgess, and
Morgan Radford were exceptional in the circle. They only gave up four hits in their nine innings, while walking two. The trio combined for nine strikeouts, tying the most K's in a game this season for Cumberlands.
Wood not only got the walk-off hit, but she was the only batter from either team to have multiple hits in the contest.
Maddie Sickau,
Sarah West, and
Tori Malone all had hits in the game as well for the Pats.
White started the game retiring the first eight batters in order. She gave up just two hits in her 3.1 innings of work, before Burgess entered in middle relief. When Burgess came into the game in the fourth, there was a runner on first base. The runner got to third from a stolen base and error, then was scored from a sacrifice fly to take the 1-0 lead.
UC had been hitless through the first three innings, but Wood had a leadoff single up the middle to start the fourth frame. She stole second to put herself in scoring position with
Emily Jasper at the plate. Jasper slapped the ball to the third baseman who tried to throw out Wood, but she was too fast and slid in safely. Jasper took a big lead around first, baiting the Buffaloes to throw at her. With heads up baserunning from Wood, she took off for home on the throw at Jasper, crossing easily and putting Jasper on second. UC could not move Jasper, but they had tied up the game 1-1.
Burgess was lights out in the circle, pitching 4.2 innings and picking up six strikeouts, just one behind her season best. Both teams got runners on sporadically, but could not score pushing the game to extra innings. Milligan led off the ninth inning with a double, bringing on Radford. A sacrifice bunt pushed the runner to third, but Radford issued a groundout and popout, getting out of the jam.
A tie game through nine innings brought out the international tie breaker rule for the tenth, putting a runner on second base. With one out and MU's runner still on second, their batter hit a line drive to right field,
Mackenzie Pawlak had to make a diving slide to catch the ball, saving a base hit. The final out was a grounder to
Katie Cheeseman at second, leaving UC with needing to score one to end the game.
Green began on second with Pawlak as the first batter up. She squared around for the sacrifice bunt knocking the ball to the third baseman. However, Milligan tried to throw out Green at third, but her speed put her in safely and Pawlak trotted to second. Wood was the next batter, getting her RBI single for the 2-1 game winner.
Cumberlands now improves to 18-9 on the season while Milligan is now 13-4. UC will have another tough day of games on Friday, March 18 when they travel back to Lawrenceville, GA. They will play a doubleheader against #14 Georgia Gwinnet with first pitch at 2PM ET with live stream available
