Patriots Have Offensive Explosion to Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

Laurinburg, NC – The third-ranked UC men's lacrosse team had 10 players net at least one goal as the Patriots defeated St. Andrews 19-2 Friday afternoon at Knights Field.  It was Cumberlands highest offensive output of the season as they improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 against the AAC.

Christian Vanover led the way with four goals to go along with a season-high four assists, while Thomas Fogarty added a hat trick with three ground balls.  Dylan Crouch notched five points and four ground balls in the game as Tanner Popovich, Maalek Wilson, and Dom Lulow each tallied a pair of goals.  Dawson Coltran dished out three assists in the win as well.

Defensively, UC was led by Taylor Long who notched a career-high five caused turnovers and seven ground balls.  Jake Morgan and Gabe Schwaiger each added two caused turnovers as Morgan scooped four groundballs.  Will Settle made five saves and held the Knights scoreless in the first half as Michael Toohey stopped three shots and scooped five ground balls in the second half.

The Patriots scored seven unanswered goals in the opening quarter with the first coming two minutes in as Schylar Chapman forced a turnover and on the transition Crouch found Vanover for the goal to put UC in front.  Vanover added a second goal before Fogarty tallied a goal and an assist making it 4-0 with 7:40 left in the first quarter.  Popovich took advantage of a St. Andrews penalty as he put a well-placed shot into the cage for a man-up goal extending the lead to 5-0.  Vanover completed his first quarter hattrick as Wilson netted his second goal of the game in the final minute for the 7-0 advantage.

Cumberlands extended their lead in the second quarter as Vanover found Crouch in front of the cage for a man-up goal at the 11:38 mark making it 8-0.  UC continued to dominant the possession as Fogarty added a goal before connecting with Chrystian Coleman a minute later extending the lead to 10-0.  St. Andrews looked to answered, however, Settle made a pair of saves as Long forced a Knights turnover to keep them off the scoreboard.  UC added three more goals to take a 13-0 lead into the break.

The two teams traded goals to open the third quarter before the Patriots defense had three caused turnovers and a Toohey save to keep the Knights in check.  Offensively, Crouch connected with Vanover midway through the third quarter extending UC's lead to 15-1. Neither team was able to add to their score as Cumberlands took a 15-1 lead into the final period.

The Patriots extended their lead in the fourth quarter off of goals from Lulow and a Breckin Sharkey unassisted goal to make it 17-1 with 8:25 left.  UC added two of the final three goals, including Zachary Swann first collegiate goal for the 19-2 final.

UC will return to the field tomorrow when they take on second-ranked Keiser at 1 p.m. in Laurinburg, NC.  Live stats for that game is available here.
