Babson Park, FL – The second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team outscored Webber 14-4 over the final three quarters to defeated the (RV) Warriors 20-9 Saturday afternoon at Warriors Field. With the win, the Patriots improve to 9-1 on the season, while the Warriors move to 6-6.
Bella Ricchiazzi led the way for UC with five goals, six points, four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Reegan Hensley added five points, while
Morgan Tate recorded her first collegiate hat trick.
Stephanie Meyer and
Carolina Johnson each finished with a pair of goals in the win.
Trinity Brown was dominant on the draw control again scooping 13 as she added a pair of caused turnovers and a ground ball.
Erin Bryant and Meyer each tallied three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls in the win.
Olivia McCarrell made seven saves and earned the win.
Hensley got the scoring started in the first quarter as she dodged around two defenders and fired a shot into the top right corner of the cage just over a minute into the game. Webber netted four of the next six goals before Ricchiazzi converted a free-position to even the score at 4-4 midway through the quarter. After the two teams traded goals,
Katie Wharton found Ricchiazzi in front of the cage, who put a shot just inside the pipes for a goal putting UC in front 6-5 to end the first quarter.
Bryant forced a Webber turnover to start the second quarter as Johnson added pair of goals within a 30 second span to extend the lead to 8-5. The Patriots defense picked up their intensity in the quarter forcing a pair of Warriors turnovers, the second of which was Ricchiazzi intercepting a pass and firing the shot into the cage to extend the lead to 9-5. Hensely and Wharton each added a goal as UC forced four Webber turnovers as McCarrell tallied a save giving Cumberlands an 11-6 edge at the break.
Webber cut the lead to 11-7 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Patriots responded quickly as Ricchiazzi found Tate for a man-up goal. Tate won the ensuing draw control and on that possession Belton connected with Hensley for a goal to make it 13-7 five minutes into the third period.
Morgan Terpstra and Tate each converted a free position goal in the period as UC extended their lead to 15-8.
Cumberlands continued to dominate the possession outscoring Webber 5-1 in the fourth quarter. UC had five different goal scorers find the cage, including Tate netting her third goal of the game and
Marisa Helsten getting in on the scoring action.
The Patriots will return to action Wednesday, March 23, when they open conference play at Thomas More. Game is set for a 5 p.m. start time with live video available
