Williamsburg, KY – Four Patriots finished with at least three goals as the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team defeated Marian 23-4 Friday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Marian moves to 3-7 overall and 1-2 against the MSC.
Trinity Brown had a career day dishing out three assists and tallying four points to go along with four caused turnovers and eight draw controls.
Bella Ricchiazzi led the way for UC with four goals, five assists and three caused turnovers, while
Reegan Hensley netted a team-high five goals.
Morgan Tate recorded her second hattrick in the last three goals, while scooping five draw controls as
Brooke Ollerenshaw notched a career-high three goals and four points in the win.
Both teams started the game struggling to find their offensive rhythm early, as
Hannah Churchley forced a turnover and
Olivia McCarrell made one of her three saves in the first three minutes of play. After the two teams traded goals, Ricchiazzi forced a turnover and found
Katie Wharton in front of the cage for goal putting UC in front 2-1 with 8:44 remaining. Ricchiazzi connected with
Marisa Helsten for a goal before adding one of her own extending the lead to 4-1. UC added two of the final three first quarter goals, including Brown finding Hensley in transition to give Cumberlands a 6-2 lead.
The Patriots added four goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter, including a pair of goals from Tate to take a 10-2 advantage. Two minutes later, Ricchiazzi dodged towards the cage a put a shot into the upper corner, before finding Ollerenshaw for a goal 50 seconds later to make it 12-2 with 7:40 remaining. The Knights looked to cut into the lead, however,
Morgan Terpstra and McCarrell each tallied a caused turnover before
Rachel Leigh and Ollrenshaw connected with the back of the cage as the Patriots took a 14-2 lead at the break.
Hensley scored four straight goals to start the third quarter off assists from Brown and Ricchiazzi to extend the lead to 18-2 with 4:31 left. The Knights added a late goal before Brown scooped the ensuing draw control raced up field and put a shot into the lower corner of the cage for the goal to make it 19-3.
The two teams traded goals to open the fourth quarter before Ricchaizzi and Terpstra found the cage giving UC a 23-4 advantage with 4:41 remaining. Two minutes later Ollerenshaw completed the hat trick off an assists from Ricchiazzi. Marian looked to cut into the deficit, however,
Mia Bosah made two fourth quarter saves for the 23-4 final.
Cumberlands will return to the field Monday, March 28, when they host tenth-ranked Georgetown. First draw is set for 7 p.m. with live video available
