Williamsburg, KY - After falling at the hands of Austin Peay yesterday, UC's women's tennis program rebounded in a big way as they were able to handedly defeated the Lions. Cumberlands was in control throughout as they were able to grab their 12th win of the season in the 6-1 victory.
Doubles play went as well as the Patriots could have hoped with them taking all three contests with relative ease to grab the first point of the match. Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros acted as UC's top duo and were more than up for the task as they won by a count of 6-1. Meiri Okuwaki and Tessa Gray followed at the #2 spot with a win of their own as they were able to get the 6-3 win. Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani finished off doubles as strongly as the Patriots had begun with them getting a 6-2 win, jumping ahead 4-0 before never looking back.
Meiri Okuwaki acted as the #1 in singles play with this being her first match at the top spot in her collegiate career. She certainly played like a #1 during her performance as she was able to get the 6-4, 6-0 win to make it a 2-0 lead for Cumberlands. Hana Shimeno followed in the #3 spot with a nearly flawless win with her conceding just one point in the matchup, winning 6-1, 6-0. Fan Shiau clinched the win for Cumberlands in the #4 spot with a win over Freed-Hardeman's Delfina Rodriguez. Shiau had little issue with her counterpart as she was able to dispose of her easily in the 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Johanna Beckmann was next to finish with her playing as UC's #2 for the first time this year. After dropping her first canto by a score of 6-2, Beckmann rallied back in a hard-fought second set to win 7-5 and force a third. It did not go her way, though, as she ultimately fell 6-3.
Mikaela Fros competed at #5 in just her fifth singles match of the season and her first in nearly two months. That did not seem to faze her in the least as she rattled off a flawless win over Savannah Corbitt 6-0, 6-0 to make it a 5-1 game in the Patriot's favor. Satsuki Mitani rounded out the contest for UC in the #6 spot and ended up ending things on a high note. In just her first bout of singles action this season Mitani played as well as she could have hoped with her defeating her Lion counterpart 6-0, 6-1.
UC moves to 12-5 on the season with this win with them now holding a 3-1 record in MSC play. The Patriots will look for win number four against a Mid-South opponent tomorrow when they take on Bethel at home with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
