Athens, TN – Despite
Thomas Fogarty recording eight points, the third-ranked UC men's lacrosse team fell in overtime to ninth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan 14-13 Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldogs Athletic Field. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in AAC play, while the Patriots move to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Fogarty led the way with five goals and three assists, while
Christian Vanover notched a hat trick to go along with an assist and three ground balls.
Dylan Crouch and
Dawson Coltran each added a pair of points.
Jake Morgan tallied six caused turnovers and six ground balls to lead the Patriots defense. His second caused turnover in the game was his 152 of his career, making him the program's all-time leader.
Nik Kubik went 18-27 on faceoff with a team-high eight ground balls as Coltran and
Tate Crowell scooped four ground balls each.
Will Settle made 11 saves in between the pipes.
Tennessee Wesleyan struck first, scoring a pair of goals in the first give minutes to take the early lead. UC took advantage of a Bulldogs penalty as Coltran found Fogarty for a man-up goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the first quarter. Cumberlands evened the score minutes later as Fogarty forced a turnover on a Tennessee Wesleyan clear attempt and Vanover put a well-placed shot into the cage. The two teams traded goals over the next minute before Fogarty dodged from behind the cage and made a one-handed shot with five second left in the period to give the Patriots the 4-3 lead.
Both defenses picked up their intensity in the second quarter as the Bulldogs evened the score at 4-4 with 10:42 left. UC pulled back in front minutes later as
Schylar Chapman's caused turnover sparked a Patriots transition the closed out with
Chrystian Coleman finding Fogarty for a goal to make it 5-4. Morgan a pair of caused turnovers over the final half of the period as UC took a 5-4 lead into the break.
Cumberlands came out of the half strong as Kubik won the first two faceoffs of the third quarter as Coltran and Crouch put well-placed shots into the cage to extend the lead to 7-4, two minutes in. After the Bulldogs scored twice, Vanover found Fogarty cutting for a goal to make it 8-6 with 7:58 left in the third quarter. Tennessee Wesleyan scored four of the next six goals, with UC two goals coming from Vanover, to even the score at 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
The back-and-forth battled continued into the fourth period as Tennessee Wesleyan added a goal 12 seconds in to take an 11-10 advantage. Four minutes late Morgan forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Fogarty found Kava, who put a shot top-self to make it 11-11 with 10:32 remaining. UC retook the lead at the 8:29 as Crouch connected with
Maalek Wilson for the go-ahead goal. After Tennessee Wesleyan evened the score, Fogarty scooped a ground ball, off of a Crouch shot, and put it home to give UC a 13-12 advantage with 3:48 left. The Bulldogs scored the equalizer 30 seconds later. UC had a couple of chances to go in front, however, they couldn't convert as the game remained tied 13-13 heading into overtime.
Crowell won the opening faceoff of overtime, however, UC turned the ball over and Gavin Greco scored the game-winning goal at the 2:23 mark for the 14-13 final.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday when they travel to Waleska, GA to face #6 Reinhardt. The game is set for 7 p.m. start.
