Williamsburg, KY - Cumberlands men's tennis program has been on a tear of late, winning nine of their last 10 contests with their most recent coming against the Tigers Wednesday afternoon. UC ended up having no trouble in their bout with a conference opponent as the Patriots improved to 15-5 and 5-1 in MSC play with their 7-0 sweep.
Doubles play was all UC with them taking all three matchups. Mattis Le Montagner and Luis Montull were first to finish with them making easy work of their Tiger counterpart 6-1 as the #2. Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu were next to reach a conclusion, playing out of the #3 spot. Muller and Wu had a more competitive match on their hands compared to Le Montagner and Montull, but the result ended up being the same with UC ahead 6-4 at the end. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub wrapped things up as Cumberlands' top tandem with them also grabbing a 6-4 win as UC was able to take a commanding 1-0 lead.
Barbier helped make it a 2-0 advantage for the Patriots at the #1 spot in singles play as he ended up taking care of his matchup. Martin won the first set 6-4 and found himself ahead 2-0 before his Campbellsville opponent was forced to retire due to injury. Mattis Le Montagner follower Barbier's win with one of his own as he handled Hernan Toledo. Mattis had a fight on his hands in the first stanza and managed to pull out the 6-4 win before dominating in the second to win 6-0 and push UC's advantage to 3-0. Luis Montull secured the win for the Patriots at the #4 spot with a win in which he did not give up a point. Montull was in complete control throughout his contest with him being able to take the first canto 6-0 before finding himself ahead 4-0 before his opponent retired, clinching the 4-0 lead for UC.
Martin Muller made it a 5-0 tally for Cumberlands next with him playing a very competitive match at #3 singles. Muller was matched up with the Tiger's Satoshi Yamada and it ended up being a back-and-forth affair. Martin battled his way through a fight of a first set, winning 7-6 before falling in the second by a count of 6-2 to force a tiebreaker. Fortunately for the Patriots, the tiebreaker went Muller's way with him finding his second wind and winning 10-4.
Christian de la Fuente Nodado and Hung-Ju Wu closed out the contest for Cumberlands with convincing wins of their own to help wrap up UC's 12th sweep of the season and fourth straight. Nodado out of the #5 spot had little trouble with his match with him claiming a 6-2, 6-4 win while Wu had even less of a fight as he came out on top by a final of 6-2, 6-2.
UC will get some time to recuperate from this one as they are not set to hit the courts again until next Wednesday, April 6th when they take on UT Southern. That matchup with the Firehawks will be played at home, acting as the Patriot's senior night, and is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
