Pikeville, KY - The Patriots got to break out the brooms for the sixth time this year and the third time in their past five matches against the University of Pikeville Sunday afternoon. UC was in complete control from beginning till end against the Bears as Cumberlands was able to take home the 5-0 win to move to 9-3 on the year.
The Patriots began the match with a strong display in doubles play as Cumberlands ended up taking all three contests. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub got the ball rolling for UC at #1 with a 6-2 win while Luis Montull and Mattis Le Montagner clinched the win for UC at the #2 spot with a 6-1 victory. The Patriots ended up finishing doubles as strongly as they started off with Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu grabbing a 6-2 win of their own at #3.
Mattis Le Montagner grabbed the first win of singles play at #2, making it a 2-0 in favor of the Patriots quickly. Mattis was tasked with Pikeville's Juan Diego Alzate and he handled him well, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. He was followed by Martin Muller who had a tough contest on his hands in the early going at #3 before grabbing the win. Muller was matched up with the Bear's Mirko Dedich and had to fight his way to a 7-5 win in the first stanza before winning the second in unceremonious fashion by a final count of 6-2 to make it a 3-0 advantage for UC.
Martin Barbier ended up clinching the win for Cumberlands as the #1 after having to battle his way to a three-set victory. Barbier handled his assignment, Valentin Ortiz, well in the first set with a 6-3 win. Ortiz then evened things up in a 6-4 win in the second canto, setting things up for a decisive third set. Barbier once again came out on top as he turned the tables on Ortiz in the 6-4 win, helping UC claim the win.
Luis Montull ended up ending the day for UC in the #4 spot with a flawless victory, winning 6-0, 6-0. Montull closed the book on this one for the Patriots as well as he could've hoped as he did not allow the Bear's Fernando Proano to score a point on him, making it a 5-0 lead for Cumberlands.
Christian de la Fuente Nodado and Pierluigi Cruypenninck both saw their matches go unfinished, but there were some takeaways both could be happy with. Nodado competed in the #5 spot and was able to win the first set 6-2 while finding himself ahead 2-1 before his match came to an end. Pierluigi hadn't made it through the first stanza before his contest was called, but he did find himself ahead 4-1 at #6.
UC will play their third match in as many days on Monday, March 7th, when they take on #16 Williams Woods. The Patriots will be back inside their friendly confines for that one as they are set to host the Owls beginning at 4:00 p.m.
