Williamsburg, KY - The Patriots had to wait a little longer for the sweep after postponing their contest with William Woods, but Cumberlands finally got it Wednesday evening. UC made quick work of the Owls on their way to collecting their 10th win of the season in the 4-0 victory.
Doubles was a quick win for the Patriots, helping them jump out to the 1-0 advantage. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub grabbed their fourth straight win at #1 doubles against William Woods' top tandem. Cumberlands' dynamic duo was not to be denied as they controlled their match on the way to the 6-3 win.Â
Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu followed suit in the #3 spot with a win of their own to claim the first point of the match. Muller and Wu's contest looked much like their teammate's as they were in complete control throughout in the 6-2 victory. Thanks to the efforts at the #1 and #3 spots, UC's #2 tandem of Mattis Le Montagner and Luis Montull's matched went unplayed as the Patriots had claimed the win.
Singles play went in similar fashion as to doubles with UC taking three straight matchups to clinch the sweep. Le Montagner grabbed the first of those wins at #2 with him winning in straight sets. Mattis made easy work of the Owl's Patrick Shelepov by a count of 6-3, 6-0. Barbier followed Le Montagner with his own win at the top spot, making it a 3-0 lad for UC. After dropping the opening stanza to William Woods' Ben Grunley, Martin turned it on in the second set, claiming a 6-4 win before taking the decisive third set by a count of 6-2.
Martin Muller finished off the day for UC as he ended up grabbing the win at #3 to give Cumberlands the 4-0 win. Muller jumped out to the early lead, winning 6-4 in the first set. He then dropped the second 6-2 before rebounding in the third canto with a 6-1 win to help the Patriots move into double-digit wins on the year.
Montull, Christian de la Fuente Nodado, and Wu each saw their matches go unplayed with UC able to claim the win without their efforts.
The Patriots now move to 10-3 on the season with this win, coming out on top in each of their last four matches. UC will look to make it five straight when they return to conference play on Sunday, March 13th, when they match up with Cumberland University. Cumberlands will host the Phoenix in their afternoon contest at the UC Tennis Complex with a start time of 2:00 p.m.
