Pikeville, KY - Women's tennis opened up the conference portion of their schedule the way they wanted to as they grabbed the win over the University of Pikeville in convincing fashion. The Patriots claimed their second sweep in as many days with their 6-0 win over the Bears, moving to 9-3 on the season.
Doubles play began with Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros doing what they've done so many times before: win. Cumberlands' top tandem lived up to their #1 spot with a dominant win over Pikeville's Andrea Hurtado and Gabriela Guacanes by a final of 6-1. The Bears responded with a win at #2 as Tessa Gray and Meiri Okuwaki fell 6-3 to tie things up and set up a decisive third matchup. It was all Cumberlands in the rubber match with Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani grabbing the first point of the match for UC thanks to a 6-0 win at #3.Â
Singles play belonged to the Patriots with Nagao kicking things off with a victory at #1 over Hurtado. Tomomi was in complete control throughout her match as she gave up only one point, winning, 6-0, 6-1. Meiri Okuwaki followed Nagao with a convincing win of her own, making it a 3-0 advantage for UC after playing her way to a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Johanna Beckmann clinched the win for Cumberlands in the #4 spot with her win over Gabriela Guacanes. Beckmann was locked in from beginning to end during her singles match with her garnering a flawless win in the 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Guacanes.Â
Catherine Rae and Hana Shimeno padded onto the win after Beckmann clinched as they both won their matchups. Rae competed in the #3 spot for UC and ended up with a fight on her hands. Pikeville's Luisa Diaz gave Catherine everything she had with Rae winning out in the end by a final of 6-1, 7-5. Shimeno had a bit of an easier time at #5, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Fan Shiau's match in the #6 spot went unfinished but it did not come without some positives. Despite Shiai's match not reaching a conclusion, she was able to win the first set 6-1 and found herself ahead 4-0 before the match was called.
UC will look to make it a third win in three days when they host #16 Williams Woods Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Patriots and Owls have already met once this season with Cumberlands having the stronger showing, winning 4-0 and will look to do the same again.
