Williamsburg, KY – The second ranked UC women's lacrosse team had seven players tally multiple goals as the Patriots defeated Truett-McConnell 26-2 Wednesday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The Patriots recorded the second most goals (26) and draw controls (27) in program history as the Pats improve to 6-1 on the season.
Reegan Hensley dished out a career-high three assists to go along with a hat trick, while
Carolina Johnson netted a career-high four goals in the win. It marks the third straight multi-assist game for Hensley, as it marked Johnson's fifth straight multi-goal game.
Bella Ricchiazzi notched a team-high five goals, including recording her 300
th career point in the game.
Marisa Helsten and
Katie Wharton each notched hat tricks.
Trinity Brown led UC's defensive charge with four caused turnovers and a game-high ten draw controls. Christina Min scooped eight draw controls and three ground balls, while forcing three turnovers.
Rachel Leigh added four draw controls, three ground balls, and three points as
Olivia McCarrell made a pair of saves in three quarters of action.
UC dominated the first quarter netted a season-best 13 goals in the opening frame. Johnson netted two of the first three goals in the contest before
Bella Ricchiazzi found
Katie Wharton in front of the cage for a goal to make it 4-0, three minutes into the game. Cumberlands extended their lead as Leigh scooped the ground ball, off of a save, and fired it home, before Ricchiazzi added a free position to make it 6-0 with 11:04 remaining. The Bears looked to cut into the deficit, however, a wide shot and six caused turnovers by the Patriots defense kept them off the board. UC added seven unanswered goals, including goals from
Marisa Helsten and
Morgan Terpstra, while Hensley netted a goal as time expired in the quarter to give the Patriots a 13-0 edge.
The Patriots continued to share the wealth in the second quarter as
Aleyah Belton, Ricchiazzi, Helsten, Wharton, and
Morgan Tate all found the back of the cage. UC continued to dominant the possession taking a 5-1 edge in draw controls on the period. Also, Brown forced a pair of turnovers, while McCarrell saved a Hope Frady free position attempt to give the Patriots an 18-0 advantage at the break.
Cumberlands strong play continued in the third quarter as Brown forced a turnover on the Bears opening possession as Leigh found Wharton and Meyer connected with Ricchiazzi for goals to make it 20-0 with 11:02 remaining. Late in the period
Mia Rask converted a free-position goal for her first collegiate goal extending the lead to 22-0.
Both teams scored a pair of goals to open the fourth quarter as Hensley found Helsten in front of the cage for a goal to make it 25-2. Tate won the ensuing draw control and on that possession Leigh connected with Johnson for her career-high fourth goal and the 26-2 final.
The Patriots will return to the field Monday, March 14, when they kick-off their four-game road swing with Ave Maria. The game is slated for 6 p.m. with live video available
