Atchison, KS – Dylan Crouch and
Thomas Fogarty combined for nine goals and five assists to pace the third-ranked UC men's lacrosse team to a 18-7 win over eighth-ranked Benedictine Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Patriots close out the regular season with a 10-3 mark, making it the third time in program history that Cumberlands has reach double-digit win total.
Crouch netted four goals and dished out four assists to tie his season-high of eight points. Fogarty tied his season-high with five goals, while
Christian Vanover added four points.
Maalek Wilson and
Dawson Coltran both finished with three points apiece in the win.
Will Settle made ten saves over the first three quarters along with three ground balls to earn the win.
Jake Morgan tallied a team-high three caused turnovers and scooped five ground balls, while
Nik Kubik went 19-28 on faceoffs with 11 ground balls.
The Patriots struck first with a transition goal as Coltran pushed the ball forward to Fogarty, who found Crouch in front of the cage for a goal. Settle made a save before UC took advantage of a Benedictine penalty as Crouch connected with Coltran for a man-up goal to make it 2-0.
Nik Kubik won the next faceoff and on the ensuing possession Fogarty put a well-placed shot into the cage to make it 3-0 with 9:18 remaining in the first quarter.
Breckin Sharkey and
Christian Vanover each added a goal to make it 5-0, while the Patriots kept the Ravens in check to take a five goal advantage into the second quarter.
Settle made a save ten seconds into the second quarter and on the ensuing transition Coltran connected with Vanover to make it 6-0. Benedictine netted three goals over the course of the next ten minutes to cut the lead to 6-3 with 4:04 remaining. Kubik won the next two faceoffs to lead the Patriots response of two goals in just over a minute span as
Maalek Wilson and Fogarty capped off those possessions to make it 8-3. UC continued to press the Ravens and in the closing seconds of the half Crouch found
Dom Lulow for a goal to extend the lead to 9-3 at the break.
Cumberlands carried that momentum into the third quarter where they outscored Benedictine 7-2 on the period. The Ravens cut the lead to 9-4 a minute into the quarter, however, UC responded as
Jake Morgan forced a turnover and
Nick Kava capped off the ensuing possession with a well-placed shot to push the lead back to six goals. Crouch and Fogarty combined for five unanswered goals to give the Patriots a 15-4 lead with 2:55 remaining. Settle added three saves to keep the Ravens in check as Fogarty closed out the quarter with his third goal of the period to make it 16-5.
Wilson scooped the ground ball off the opening faceoff in the fourth quarter and connected with Kava for his first of two straight assists, the other went to
Evan Barton as UC took an 18-5 advantage with 11:14 remaining. Coltran netted Cumberlands final goal as Benedictine tallied four of the final five goals in the game for the 19-9 final.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday, April 15, when they host St. Andrews in the quarterfinals of the AAC Tournament. The game is set for 7 p.m. at the UC Lacrosse Complex.
