Williamsburg, KY - Cumberlands' home finale proved to go the way they wanted as the Patriots were able to get the sweep over Marian Wednesday afternoon. UC was able to take care of business in their midweek matchup against the Knights to give them a perfect 9-0 home record on the season, winning 7-0.
Doubles play belonged to the Patriots with them winning each of their three bouts. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub were the first tandem to finish with them playing as the #1 team. They handled their assignment in Mark Griffin and Jones McNamara with ease as Barbier and Banoub grabbed their 19th win on the year in the 6-2 win.Â
Luis Montull and Mattis Le Montagner clinched the first win of the day for UC at #2, winning 6-4. They had a tough fight on their hands in the early going of their contest, but pulled away late and scored the final three points to take the 6-4 victory. Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu finished off doubles play as strongly as it started at #3 with a 6-4 win of their own. They found themselves ahead 4-1 to start before Marian made a run at a comeback. The Knights were denied, though, as Muller and Wu pulled through for their sixth straight win.
Barbier picked up right where he left off when singles began, grabbing another win. Martin had no issues as Cumberlands' #1 as he defeated Griffin once again. This time, it came by a final tally of 6-2, 6-0 to give Barbier his 19th win of the year for a career best mark for singles wins in a season to beat out his 18 wins from the previous campaign.
Muller was next to finish, playing out of the #3 spot. His match looked much like Barbier's in that he didn't concede a point in his second stanza on his way to the win. Martin's counterpart put up a fight in the early going but it was all for naught as Muller pulled out the 6-4 win in the first set before dominating 6-0 in the second to make it a 3-0 count in favor of Cumberlands. Mattis Le Montagner handed UC win number 19 on the season after Muller's win, competing out of the #2 spot and doing his part on his way to collecting the win. Mattis made quick work of his opponent in the first set with a 6-1 before dropping the second 6-4 while rallying in the third 6-0 to grab his eighth win in a row.
Luis Montull also ended up having to go past the second set to get the win as he played as the Patriot's #4. Montull ended up on the wrong side of the scorecard in the opening canto as he fell 6-3 but then rallied to win 6-2 in the second while taking the tie breaker by a count of 10-7 to make it a 5-0 score in favor of the Patriots.
Christian de la Fuente Nodado and Hung-Ju Wu's contests were a little less exciting as they both handedly beat their matchups. Nodado competed as UC's #5 with him giving up just one point in the 6-1, 6-0 win while Wu wrapped things up with a 6-4, 6-2 win to complete the Patriot's 16th sweep of the season.Â
Cumberlands improves to 19-4 on the campaign with a 8-1 mark in conference play, wining each of their last eight and finishing the season undefeated at home. The Patriots have one more contest in the regular season with them set to end things against MSC foe Georgetown on Friday. UC will travel to take on the Tigers in that affair with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
