Williamsburg, KY - The Patriots were able to end their season in dominant fashion against the Tigers, grabbing their 16th sweep of the season. Like so many time before, Cumberlands was in complete control on their way to their ninth win in 10 tries as they defeated MSC foe Georgetown 7-0 to close out the regular season.
Luis Montull and Mattis Le Montagner got the afternoon started for UC as they were the first to finish for the Patriots in doubles. The #2 tandem was in complete control in their match, grabbing the first four points of the contest before running away and getting the 6-1 win. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub followed suit with a win of their own as the team's top tandem to make it a 1-0 lead for Cumberlands. Barbier and Banoub continued their strong play, winning their ninth bout in their last 10 tries by a count of 6-2 while Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu closed out doubles play with a strong win of their own in the 6-3 victory.Â
As in doubles, Le Montagner was first to finish once singles play got underway to make t a 2-0 lead for the Patriots. Mattis had not trouble with his counterpart with the native of France winning his ninth straight contest 6-1, 6-0. He was followed up by Barbier who had little trouble getting the win himself, winning 6-1, 6-3 to make it a 3-0 advantage for Cumberlands.
Luis Montull was next to finish with his win helping UC claim their third straight sweep. Montull's match looked much like his teammates with him taking home the convincing win as Luis jumped out to big advantages in both of his sets before never looking back on his way to the 6-3, 6-3 win, making it a score of 4-0. Martin Muller followed suit with a win of his own at the team's #3, but it was not without some drama as he needed a tiebreaker to be named the winner. Muller dropped the opening set 6-4 before evening things up at 7-6 (7-5) and eventually taking the tiebreaker 10-7 to give UC a 5-0 lead.
Christian de la Fuente Nodado and Hung-Ju Wu closed out the day for UC with a pair of wins to finish things off in the final two spots. Nodado played out of the #5 spot with him having to fight in the first set before settling in. Christian battled his way to a 7-6 (7-2) win the first canto before finding his rhythm and winning in the second 6-2 to extend Cumberlands' lead even further with one match to go. Wu put a bow on the 2022 regular season with a win at #6 to complete the sweep with him grabbing the 6-4, 6-3 victory.
UC improves to 20-4 on the season overall with a 9-1 mark in conference play, good enough for second in the MSC while winning each of their last nine contests. The Patriots will start their postseason run next week as they are set to compete in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Cumberlands will travel to Bowling Green, KY for the tournament with the first round set to get underway on Thursday, April 21st, while the championship match will take place Sunday.
