Patriots Hit Multiple PR's; Morris Qualifies for Nationals at Electric City Invite

Anderson, SC – Cumberlands traveled down to Anderson University for the Electric City Invitational where they had a great day at the track, posting countless personal best performances along with a national qualifying finish in the triple jump.
 
Jullia Morris secured her ticket to NAIA nationals after her first-place performance in the triple jump Saturday afternoon. Her leap of 11.64m was a national "B" standard, earning her another nationals appearance.
 
Meredith Elstun put together another impressive performance in the steeplechase this weekend. The senior hit her second straight PR, finishing in 12:13.4 for second place. Samantha Connelly placed seventh in 13:34.38 while Morgan Lucason ran in this race for the first time in her collegiate career, placing eighth with a time of 14:05.08.
 
The 4x100 relay squad had their best showing of the season crossing the finish in 48.87. Ayani Hinson, Kathryn Hunter, Jullia Morris, and Jaida Reed combined for a fourth place finish out of nine teams. Morris, Reed, and Hinson also raced in the 100m dash, placing 15th, 18th, and 20th out of 41 competitors. Morris had her fastest 100m time as a Patriot with a 12.71, while Reed and Hinson sprinted to the finish line in 12.76 and 12.92.
 
Kathryn Hunter and Cora Stevens represented Cumberlands in the 200m dash in Anderson. Hunter finished 12th with a time of 26.42 while Stevens placed 18th in 26.84. Cora and Morgan Bruin raced their way to personal bests in the 400m dash. Stevens rounded the track in 59.88 for seventh while Bruin finished in 1:03.17 for 17th.
 
Six Patriots took to the starting line for the 1500. Through five heats and 62 total competitors, Lydiah Strauel was the top UC runner to finish placing 15th in 5:01.91, over an eight second PR. Ashley Terry and Meredith Elstun finished 21st and 23rd with times of 5:03.76 and 5:08.73, Terry's finish was a career best. Kinsey Forgey also had a personal best race placing 29th in 5:13.64. Lauren Sanderson and Nevaeh Warren rounded out the Patriot finishers with a PR finish each. Sanderson completed her race in 5:15.05 with Warren just behind in 5:15.70.
 
Terry, Sanderson, and Strauel also competed in the 800m race later in the day. The freshman trio posted finishes of 13th, 15th, and 20th out of 51 runners. Terry ran a 2:26.59, Sanderson a 2:28.98, and Strauel a 2:30.80.
 
Isabelle Blatz had a career day in the 5k racewalk early Saturday morning, walking her way to a 38:31.06 finish, earning her first place out of two competitors.
 
Cumberlands entered five runners in the hurdle events on Saturday. Hailey Martin competed in the 100m hurdles where she placed tenth with a 16.52 finish. Martin also led the way for the Pats in the 400 hurdles with a 1:08.11 time for 11th. Mikkah Siler and Nevaeh Warren entered this race for the first time and posted 17th and 18th place finishes with times of 1:17.01 and 1:20.46. Samantha Connelly was the next finisher with a PR time of 1:20.87. Morgan Lucason was the final UC finisher, she paced a 1:28.86 in the first 400 hurdle race of her career as well.
 
Two Pats finished in the top-seven in the 5k at Anderson University this weekend. Lauren McHan paced herself to a fourth-place finish with a time of 18:37.92. Taylor Warren was the second Patriot runner in this event, finishing in 18:56.48 for seventh place and a new personal best.
 
Trinity Sherrod was the only Patriot with a score in the javelin throw. She placed 20th with a 17.23m throw as her best of the day. Paige Newby competed in the high jump where she cleared a height of 1.45m to tie her career best.
 
Delores Stevenson competed in three throwing events this weekend. She posted PRs in the hammer and discus after throws of 40.15m and 30.29m. This earned her seventh in the hammer and 15th in the discus. She reached a distance of 9.38m for 15th place in the shot put as well. 
 
The Patriots will have the next weekend off before competing for a Mid-South Conference title on May 1st and 2nd. The MSC championships will be held in Williamsburg, KY at UC's home track.
