Williamsburg, KY - To open up Mid-South Conference tournament play, the UC women's lacrosse team utilized eight different scorers to get past (RV) Webber, 23-4. Home soil continues to be where the Patriots thrive, who are now 9-0 at the UC Lacrosse Complex and hold an overall 17-1 record on the season.
Both
Stephanie Meyer and
Katie Wharton hit career marks in the contest with the assists they dished out. For Meyer she picked up six assists while also scoring once herself, along with four ground balls, and two caused turnovers. With Wharton, she tallied five assists and a trio of goals for a team best eight points.
Bella Ricchiazzi led all scorers, rattling off seven from just eight shots on goal. Along with Wharton netting a hat trick,
Carolina Johnson also sent in three balls to the back of the cage to go along with her two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Trinity Brown was once again the anchor on the defensive end earning five caused turnovers which matches the same mark as the entire Warriors team combined.
UC got on the board early and often, within the first three minutes, the Patriots had three goals from three different goal scorers in
Aleyah Belton,
Rachel Leigh and Johnson. Leigh then put UC up 4-0 after collecting a ground ball herself at 9:49 remaining in the opening quarter that led to a breakaway goal.
The Patriots held a 5-0 lead after a man up goal from Belton through seven minutes of play. Cumberlands was down a player after a yellow card, but it did not deter the offense. First,
Olivia McCarrell had to stop the Warriors from scoring, recording a save right after the yellow card was issued. Then Meyer picked up a ground ball and found Ricchiazzi in front of the net who fired home the shot for the 6-0 lead. UC tacked on two more goals to be up 8-0 after one quarter of play.
The first quarter was the most UC scored in one quarter of action, but they kept on attacking, going up 11-0, before Webber tallied their first goal of the game. The Warriors did score back-to-back goals with just under 4:30 left in quarter #2, but UC got the last goal of the half off an assist from Wharton who found Ricchiazzi, to make the score 12-2 going into the break.
Webber looked to be on the attack to open the second half, but Wharton and Brown both caused turnovers to keep the Warriors at bay. Ricchiazzi rattled off three straight goals in the third quarter, giving her four in a row for UC. Webber did earn a goal as well making it a 14-3 Cumberlands advantage with 9:24 left in the quarter.
Mia Bosah came into goal at the half and recorded a save just after UC's 14
th goal, where she had to jump into the air, keeping the ball from the back of the cage. Not satisfied with the 11-goal lead, UC finished out the third quarter with three more goals in the final four minutes of play, to extend their lead to 18-3.
The fourth quarter was all Patriots, who opened it with three goals in the first four minutes, from three different goal scorers in Johnson,
Reegan Hensley and Wharton. Webber did earn one more goal, but UC tallied a pair more to solidify the 23-4 victory.
The play from Cumberlands was consistent with what the team has displayed all season while also holding program records. This marks the 12
th time this season that the Patriots have held opponents to four or less goals in a game. It's also the 12
th time this season UC has scored 20+ goals in one game. Of the 23 goals for the Patriots, 19 of them were assisted for the second most in program history. While the 42 combined points marks the third most in UC's history.
