Bowling Green, KY - The Patriots made it two sweeps in two days to begin their postseason run with them getting the convincing win over the Phoenix one day after breaking out the brooms against Georgetown. Much like their regular season matchup with Cumberland, UC was in complete control on their way to the semifinals win, taking the victory by a count of 4-0.
Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub got things started for the Patriots with them claiming the first win of doubles play. Cumberlands' top tandem won their ninth match in their last 10 decisions handedly as they dispatched of the Phoenix's Jackson Vaughan and Hugues N'Goma by a final tally of 6-2. Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu followed suit with their own win to claim the doubles point and move the Patriots out in front. Much like their teammates, Muller and Wu had little trouble with their Cumberland counterpart with them grabbing a 6-3 victory to make it a 1-0 game in favor of UC.
Singles play ended up going UC's way as well with them taking three straight contests to end this one prematurely. Luis Montull was the first to finish playing solo with him competing in the #5 spot for the Patriots. Montull won his fourth straight match and his ninth in his last 10 tries after having to fight for a 6-4 win in the first set before dominating in the second 6-0 to make it a 2-0 lead for Cumberlands.
Martin Muller was next to finish for UC, further pushing out his team's lead. Muller had a fight on his hand at #3, but he was more than up for the task as he found a way to overcome his Phoenix opponent. Martin battled his way to a 6-4 win in the first stanza before taking the second 6-3 to move the Patriots ahead 3-0.
Hung-Ju Wu's match in the #6 spot sealed the win for Cumberlands as he was able to take care of his assignment. Wu had a tough fight on his hands in the first set as he and his opposition played an even, back-and-forth contest that saw Hung-Ju taking it in the end 7-5. Wu settled in during the second canto and dominated on his way to a 6-1 to bring this one to an end and help UC advance to the championship match.
Martin Barbier, Mattis Le Montagner, and Christian de la Fuente Nodado all saw their matches go unfinished, but they all proved to have positives with each of them winning a set during play. Barbier played as the team's #1 with him winning his first set 6-4 while Mattis also won his first set by a count of 6-2 and found himself up 6-5 in the second before his match was called. De la Fuente Nodado dropped his first set 6-3, but was resilient and came back to tie things up 6-4 in his second stanza.
The Patriots are now 22-4 on the season with an 11-match win streak while improving to 9-3 in neutral site contests. They look to add one more win to each of those columns as they seek the MSC Tournament championship. UC will clash with #7 Lindsey Wilson tomorrow afternoon in a rematch of last season's championship match with things set to begin at 3:00 p.m. CT at Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, KY.
