Williamsburg, KY – After dropping the first game to Georgetown, of the best of the three series on Thursday, the Patriots needed to win two, in order to advance on in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. However, a 1-0 victory for the Tigers in game two, clinched the series, knocking UC out.
The Patriots had six hits all coming from three different hitters in
Hailey Wood,
Emily Bryant and
Katie Cheeseman. Cumberlands was able to get runners in scoring position multiple times throughout the game, but left eight runners on base.
Morgan Radford pitched six innings in the game, giving her the loss in the circle for a 13-8 season record. She struckout five batters, tying for the third most for her in a single game this season. Radford gave up one run off eight hits.
Talli Burgess pitched the last inning, giving up no hits and striking out one.
The single run in the game came in third inning for the Tigers. Georgetown led off the inning with a bunt single and then pushed the runner to second off a sacrifice bunt. The next batter flew out, but the Tigers were able to get a hit just down the right field line to score the run and take the 1-0 lead.
One of the best chances UC had for scoring a run was in the bottom of the fourth inning, when they loaded the bases.
Maddie Sickau led off with a walk, but she was retired off a fielder's choice from Bryant. Cheeseman followed it up with a single up the middle. Radford was then walked to load the bases with just one out. However, a shallow ball to centerfield and a groundout to the first baseman left all three on base.
In the next inning with Cumberlands up to bat, Wood got an infield single and then the very next pitch
Emily Jasper hit in play. The third baseman gathered the ball but the throw went wild, putting Jasper aboard. It also allowed Wood to speed around the bases, she dove into home, but the right fielder for Georgetown made the perfect throw, not allowing her to score.
Bryant and Cheeseman got two singles to start the sixth inning for the Pats, but three fly outs in a row, kept UC of the scoreboard. Then in the final inning, Cumberlands went down in order, ending their bid in the MSC Tournament.
The loss puts UC at a 35-16 overall record. The team is currently receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll and will have to wait to see if they earn an at-large bid for the NAIA Tournament to try and keep their season alive. The selection show for the tournament is set for Tuesday, May 10 at 5PM ET on the NAIA's Facebook page
