Balanced Scoring Leads to Patriots Win in Home Finale

Williamsburg, KY – The third-ranked UC men's lacrosse team is one of the deepest teams in the NAIA and that was on full display Wednesday afternoon as 14 different players netted at least one goal in UC's 25-3 win over Point at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 8-3 on the year and 5-2 in AAC play, while the Skyhawks move to 1-13.

Dawson Coltran led the way for UC with a team-high four goals, while Thomas Fogarty and Zachary Swann finished tied with four points apiece.  For Swann that was a career-high in goals (2), assists (2) and points (4).  Breckin Sharkey netted a hattrick as three Patriots tallied multiple assists in the win. 

Tate Crowell scooped seven ground balls as Taylor Long finished with five in the game.  Gabe Schwaiger tallied four caused turnovers and three ground balls.  Will Settle made five saves in the first half to earn the win, while Michael Toohey added a pair of stops in the second half.

The Patriots opened the game with a program record 12 first quarter goals, surpassing the previous record of 11, which they have done three times.  Just over a minute into the game, Tanner Popovich connected with Dom Lulow for the goal to take the early lead.  Nik Kubik won the next two faceoffs which resulted in goals from Fogarty and Maalek Wilson to extend the lead to 3-0 three minutes in.  The score remained that way until midway through the period as Christian Vanover found Coltran for a goal, before scoring off an assist from Kubik giving the Patriots a 5-0 lead.  The two teams traded goals before Coltran completed the first quarter hattrick at the 4:10 mark making it 8-1.   UC added four more goals as Coltran capped it up with his season-best fourth goal to make it 12-1 in favor of Cumberlands.

Just over a minute into the second quarter UC extended the lead to 13-1 as Evan Barton found Kava cutting in front of the cage for a goal.  Settle made a pair of saves to keep the Skyhawks off the board as Kava found Swann, who put a well-placed shot into the cage.  Swann was involved in the next three goals as well with a goal scored and two assists, including one to Kubik to make it 17-1 with 6:52 left.  Settle added three more saves as UC took an 18-1 lead into the break.

Point netted two of the first three goals of the third quarter to cut the lead to 19-3.  Midway through the period, Barton scored on a Patriots transition, before Taylor Long added a goal on UC's next transition as Cumberlands took a 23-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Skyhawks opened the fourth quarter looking to cut into the Patriots lead, however, Toohey made back-to-back saves to turn them away.  Johnathon Vanover netted his first collegiate goal with an unassisted goal at the 6:57 mark in the fourth quarter.  Cumberlands defense continued to pressure the Skyhawks forcing four turnovers over the final five minutes as Crowell and Sherkey added a goal for thr 25-3 final.

UC will travel to Ottawa, KS to take on the Braves on Saturday, April 9, with the game scheduled to start at 2 p.m. EST.
