Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

#14 Women’s Tennis Grabs Sweep on Senior Day

Williamsburg, KY - The Patriots seemed to be well rested for their contest against UT Southern as they were able to break out the brooms in their first game of April. UC hosted the Firehawks Thursday morning with Cumberlands able to handle their assignment and get their fourth win in a row via the 4-0 win.

Doubles play ended up going the way UC wanted it to go with them taking the first point of the contest. Tessa Gray and Meiri Okuwaki got things started off with a win at the #2 spot as they grabbed their seventh consecutive victory, defeating their Firehawk counterpart 6-0. Tomomi Nagao and Johanna Beckmann followed suit at #1 doubles with a win of their own. Nagao and Beckmann took the courts for the first time together this season and looked very comfortable as they secured the first point of the math with a 6-1 win.

Satsuki Mitani and Mikaela Fros found themselves rounding out doubles play at #3. Their match went unfinished, but it was not without them taking control as they were ahead 5-2 before the contest was called.

Okuwaki picked up right where she left off as she grabbed the first win of singles play, making it a 2-0 advantage for UC. Meiri competed in the #2 spot for Cumberlands and was dominant out of that spot with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Tomomi Nagao was next to finish for the Patriots as the #1, moving the Patriot's lead out 3-0. Tomomi had little trouble with her UT Southern counterpart as Nagao was in complete control from start to finish on her way to the 6-2, 6-1 win.

Beckmann finished off the match for Cumberlands as the #3, securing the win and UC's 12th sweep of the season. Johanna had a tough matchup in the early going as UT Southern's Yen-Ju Chang played Beckmann even in the first set but the Patriot still prevailed, winning 7-5. Johanna then had a much easier time in the second canto of her performance as she did not allow a point in the 6-0 win.

Fan Shiau and Mikaela Fros both saw their matches draw to a close before they could come to a final decision as the Patriots had already claimed the win. Despite their bouts going unfinished,  Shaiu and Fros can feel good about their performances as they both found themselves ahead before their sets were called.

With this win, the Patriots improve to 15-5 on the season and 6-1 in conference, winning each of their last four contests. UC won't have to wait long before looking for win number five in a row as they're set to take on Thomas More tomorrow. Cumberlands will hit the road for that contest with the Saints with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
