Pensacola, FL – Thomas Fogarty netted five goals, while
Will Settle made 14 saves to lead the fourth-seed University of the Cumberlands men's lacrosse team to a 8-7 NAIA quarterfinals win over fifth-seed Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon. With the win the Patriots improve to 13-4 on the year and will face top-ranked Indiana Tech in the semifinals.
Fogarty tallied five goals, including three in the opening quarter, while dishing out an assist in the game.
Christian Vanover added three goals and an assist, while
Dawson Coltran picked up and assist. Settle made double-digit saves for the fifth consecutive game and the 14 saves are one of his season-best performance.
UC struck first as Fogarty netted an unassisted goal 91 seconds into the game. After winning the next faceoff, Fogarty put home a shot to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 11:51 mark. Tennessee Wesleyan responded with a pair of goals to even the game, however, UC responded with a Vanover goal to put the Patriots in front 3-2.
Nick Kava won the next faceoff and on that possession Fogarty dodged from behind the cage and fired into the back of the cage to make it 4-2. Settle made a pair of saves in the closing seconds of the quarter to keep the Patriots in front 4-2.
Settle was unstoppable in the second quarter as he made eight saves and held the Bulldogs scoreless over the 15 minute span. Cumberlands opened the period with possession as Fogarty circled behind the cage and connected with Vanover for a goal 35 seconds into the game to give UC a 5-2 advantage. The Patriots took advantage of a Bulldogs penalty as Coltran found Vanover dodging for a man-up goal to make it 6-2 in favor of the Patriots heading into the break.
Cumberlands extend their lead 35 seconds into the third quarter as Fogarty put one through the five hole into the net to make it 7-2. Tennessee Wesleyan netted three unanswered goals to cut the lead to 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs added a goal a minute into the fourth quarter to pull within a goal. Both defenses continued to apply pressure as both teams were held scoreless over the next eight minutes. The Bulldogs looked for the equalizer, however, Settle made a save and the Patriots pushed the ball up the field as Vanover found Fogarty in front of the cage for an insurance goal with 6:02 remaining. Tennessee Wesleyan added a goal late, but the Patriots defense came up with multiple stops, including a caused turnover by
Schylar Chapman as the final seconds ticked away for the 8-7 final.
It marks the fourth consecutive year that the Patriots advance to the semifinals of the NAIA Invitational. It is also the second straight year that UC will matchup with the Warriors as Indiana Tech won last year's meeting in double overtime.
