Chula Vista, CA - The University of the Cumberlands archery team saw stellar performances throughout their lineup during the USA Archery Outdoor qualification rounds on Friday. The Patriots clipped one national record, had a pair of top-qualifying marks and set four new program records on the day.
Kennedy Sumpter smashed the previous national record and ran away from the field to earn the top-seed in the women's barebow division. The freshman carded at least a 50 in four rounds including three straight to open the day. Sumpter carded a 293 in the first round and followed that up with 278 in the second round to finish with a 571. She hit 13 ten's on the day to surpass the previous national record by 56 points and hold the top-seed by 42 points.
Madison Cox led a quartet of Patriots to a top-ten finish in the women's fixed pin division. The junior carded at least a 55 in five of the first six ends to close out the first round with a 338. Cox followed that up with a 55 and two 54's over the course of the second round, while the McKee, KY native hit 22 ten's on the day to earn the top-seed with a 655.
Kaitlyn Shields hit 11 ten's and totaled a 640 during qualification to place fifth, while
Kimber Wheeler notched a seventh place finish with a 637, including 19 ten's.
Julia Shepherd notched a 318 in the first round and followed up with a 316 to qualify eighth with a score of 634, while
Hollyann Lewis posted a top-15 finish with a score of 615.
Whitney Vandiver and
Marissa Harding each posted a top-five finish and setting a program record in their respective division. Vandiver opened with a 291 and improved on that score with a 303 in the second round for a 594. That score earned the junior fifth place in the women's recurve division and surpasses the school record of 589 set by Alice Buswell in 2016. Teammate
Ceridwyn Salyers notched the fourth best qualifying score in program history as her 573 earned her 11
th place.
Harding notched the program record after carding a 678 during the qualifying rounds. The freshman opened with a 342 and closed out with a 336 in the second round to total a 678 on the day. Harding qualified fifth in the women's compound division and set the new program record by one point.
Five other Patriots posted top-15 finish in the women's compound division.
Madison Grimm was consistent over the two rounds scoring a 337 in each round to place seventh with a score of 674.
Danielle Woodie and
Hannah Moose each carded a 668, however, Woodie's 31 ten's give her the edge for 11
th place. Mackenze Murphy and
Brooke Miller tallied a 666 and 665, respectively, to both finish in the top-15.
On the men's side,
Ty Pennington set the Patriots program record in the men's barebow division. The freshman carded a 533, including shooting a 272 in the second round, to break the school record by 48 points. That score also earned Pennington the seventh seed for tomorrow's elimination rounds.
Tyler Woosley notched a 485 to place 14
th in the division.
UC had a trio of top-ten qualifiers in the men's compound division led by
Cole Zeug. The USA Indoor National runner-up shot a 692, hitting 49 ten's to qualify third.
Blaine Kostrzewski was one place back as he rallied with a 346 in the second round to finish with a 689.
Carson Sapp carded 37 ten's en route to a 682 to place him tenth, while
Jase Boils and
Aaron Adams finished with a 678 and a 677, respectively, to place 12
th and 13
th, overall.
Coby Hudson and
Brandon Durham rallied in the second round to climb into the top-ten of the men's fixed pin division. The duo both carded a 320 in the first round and a 323 in the second round, however, Hudson edged Durham on the ten count to give him sixth place.
Matthew England tallied a 631 with a team-best 25 ten's to place 15
th.
Jacob Valentini was Cumberlands top men's recurve shooter this afternoon. The senior finished with a 600 and hit nine ten's to place 13
th.
The Patriots will return to the range tomorrow for head-to-head eliminations, while team rounds are set for tomorrow afternoon. Fans can follow the live results
