Williamsburg, KY – Coming off capturing their first USA Archery Outdoor National Championship in program history, the Patriots archery team has been named the Texas Roadhouse Team of the Month for May, announced by the athletic department Tuesday. The University of the Cumberlands Athletic Department in conjunction with their corporate partner Texas Roadhouse are presenting the "Texas Roadhouse Team of the Month", which will be award to one Patriot team each month.
Cumberlands recorded 147 points over the three day competition, compiling 13 podium finishes to pull away from defending champion Texas A&M. The Patriots tallied six gold medals, four silver medals, and a trio of bronze medals on the week.
Kennedy Sumpter set the tone for Cumberlands during qualification as she set USA Archery national record in the women's barebow division earning the top-seed with a 571, 56 points better than the previous national record.
Madison Cox earned the top-seed in women's fixed pin division, while
Whitney Vandiver,
Marissa Harding and
Ty Pennington all set program records during qualification.
Cox followed that up going 6-0 in head-to-head eliminations en route to capturing the women's fixed pin gold medal. It was her third individual national championship of the year, making her the first Patriot to sweep at nationals. Teammate
Danielle Woodie, who was seeded 11
th, knocked off four of the top six seeds to tally her second individual national title. Sumpter,
Kimber Wheeler, and
Cole Zeug each finished with a bronze in the individual shoot downs.
The Patriots closed out the championships finishing either first or second in second in eight of the 12 team divisions. UC swept the compound team rounds earning gold in men's compound team, mixed compound team, and women's compound team. Cumberlands final gold medal was achieved by the women's fixed pin team. The Patriots men's recurve team, men's barebow team, and women's recurve team all recorded their highest finish in program history placing as the national runner-up in their respective division.
