Strong Second Quarter Not Enough as Patriots Fall in NAIA Quarterfinals

Southfield, MI – The third-seed Cumberlands women's lacrosse team went on a five goal run in the second quarter and had four players net multiple goals, however, it wasn't enough as they fell sixth-seed Benedictine 14-11 in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament Wednesday night.  The Patriots close out the season with an 18-3 record.

Reegan Hensley led the way with a hattrick, while Carolina Johnson, Bella Ricchiazzi, and Katie Wharton each tallied two goals and an assist, while Morgan Tate finished with a goal and two assists.  Trinity Brown scooped five draw controls and added a caused turnover, while Olivia McCarrell finished with eight saves in the game.

Trailing 1-0 two minutes into the game, Ricchiazzi found Wharton cutting in front of the net and scored UC's first goal to even the game at 1-1.  Benedictine tallied five of the next six goals to take a 6-2 lead after the opening period.

Hensley won the opening draw control of the second period and on that possession Ricchiazzi tallied her 100th goal of the season to cut the deficit to 6-3.  Hensley and Johnson add a goal each over the next eight minutes to bring UC within a goal a 6-5.  The Ravens looked to extend their lead, however, Mia Bosah came in between the pipes and made a pair of saves to keep UC within a goal.  A minute later, Wharton found Johnson for the equalizer with 3:19 remaining.  In the closing minute of the half, Johnson connected with Wharton for the go-ahead goal putting UC in front 7-6 at the break.

The two traded goals to open the third quarter before Tate Connected with Hensley for a goal to make it 9-7 with 9:48 left.  The Ravens added three straight goals to take a 10-9 edge into the fourth quarter.  Just over a minute into the fourth quarter Tate went upper corner to convert a free position attempt to even the score at 10-10 with 13:27 left.  Trailing by one, Hensley scooped a loose ball and put it home to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:39 remaining.  Cumberlands had a couple opportunities to take the lead but couldn't convert as Benedictine netted three goals in the final three minutes for the 14-11 final.
