Bowling Green, KY- Patriots take their second straight Mid-South title as they took down Freed-Hardeman in winner take all match.
Garrett DeClue had a great day on the mound as he got his fourth win of the season.
DeClue got the start and he pitched 6.1 innings scattering seven hits with only two earned runs, and nine strikeouts. DeClue said, "Today's win was a team effort, everyone played well, and the glory goes to God".
Chipper Korbacher came in relief and got the save as he pitched 1.1 innings, notching two strikeouts.
Sean Cheely led the way offensively, as he went 2-5 at the plate with a homerun and three RBIs.
Sujel Arias went 3-5 and almost hit for the cycle as he hit a triple, double, and a single.
Seth Benner and
Luis Alvarez both added doubles as well.
After a scoreless first inning, UC got the early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Arias led off with a triple to center field. Then
Ray Villanueva notched an RBI single to left field for the 1-0 lead. Benner followed with a single to center field. An RBI groundout by
Candido Encarnacion gave the Pats a 2-0 lead.
Later in the fourth the Pats added two more runs for the 4-0 lead. Villanueva singled to center field, then advanced to second on a balk. A single from Encarnacion moved Villanueva to third. Then
Andres Rolon reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI as Villanueva scored after juking the catcher for the 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Cheely singled to center field for an RBI and the 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth Freed-Hardeman scored a run, and UC responded with two more runs in sixth inning. After Villanueva reached first on an error, then scored on a double to center field for the 5-1 lead. Three batters later Alvarez singled to bring home Benner for the 6-1 lead.
The Lions cut the lead down to 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, before the Patriots added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. A lead off double by Alvarez lit up the Patriots dug out. Then Cheely stepped to the plate and hit a ball clear over the right field bullpen to take the 8-3 lead.
Then, only three outs away from being named MSC Champions, Korbacher notched the first out via strikeout then back-to-back outs to Alvarez gave the Patriots the win.
Head Coach
Brad Shelton had this to say about the weekend, "I'm really proud of the guys, they were really gritty and competitive the whole week. We played some really great defense and had great pitching, while having some timely hitting". He also added, "We graduated so many guys last year and lost guys this year to injuries and people just kept stepping up to carry on the Patriot tradition, and the best part is we get to keep playing."
