Bowling Green, KY – Cumberlands fell in both of today's games to make their record 2-2 at the end of the opening weekend. In the first game against RV McPherson the Patriots fell 3-0 (14-25,19-25, 22-25), then lost 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 17-25) to Mobile.
Game One: McPherson
In game one
Allyson Grava led the way putting in eight kills and seven digs,
Shelby Lackey also added eight kills, while
Emily Prewitt had four kills and two blocks.
Savanah Schwarz led the team in blocks and assists as she tallied 13 assists and three blocks.
Juliet Banks had a team high 12 digs.
In the first set, Grava started the game with a kill. Then
Kendall Arnold notched an ace to go up 2-0. The Bulldogs rallied two points before Grava notched another kill. Following that kill, McPherson went on a 10-3 run to take control of the set. After an Arnold kill, the Bulldogs went on a 7-1 run before taking the set.
For set two, Lackey scored the first Cumberlands point with a kill before the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run. A few plays later, UC would go on a run of their own. Lackey came away with three kills, while Grava had two kills and
Danielle Jackson notched a kill and an ace to take the lead. Following some back-and-forth action McPherson went on a late run to take the set.
In set three, the Pats fought hard but fell short by three points. UC took an early 7-3 lead behind two kills from both
Anna Blumeier and Lackey and a block from Schwarz and Prewitt. Two plays later Lackey notched another kill and
Lexi Lester put in an ace. The Bulldogs made a run to regain the lead. After some more back-and- forth action, UC pulled to within one before McPherson notched two points to win the set and the match.
Game Two: Mobile
In game two, Blumeier led the way with six kills, while Grava had five kills, nine digs and two aces. Jackson also added four kills with three blocks, while Lackey came away with 13 digs and three blocks.
Set one started in UC's favor as Blumeier notched three kills and Jackson, Lackey, and Prewitt put in a couple blocks. Mobile went on a run that gave them the lead, Blumeier then notched a kill that tied the set at 19 all. The Rams continued their run and took the set.
Set two was tightly contested with the score being 19-17 in the Rams favor. Following a UC timeout, the Pats scored two points to tie the set at 19-19. From that point, Mobile went on a 6-1 run to take set two.
The Rams carried that momentum from the end of the second set into the third set, and went on some runs that gave them the set three and match win.
Cumberlands will be back in action next weekend as they head down to Milligan, TN to play in the Milligan Mountain Madness Tournament.
