Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Patriots Tie 0-0 Against Top-10 Opponent Marian

UC Athletics

Indianapolis, IN- Playing in their first top-10 match of the season, the Patriots women's soccer team showcased a strong defensive effort in recording their first shutout of the season after earning a 0-0 draw against #7 Marian, Tuesday afternoon.

Marian started the game by putting a lot of offensive pressure on the UC defense. In the 6', Rita Aguye Cots made an impressive save after blocking a Knights' shot with an outstretched foot, right on the goal line keeping the game scoreless. Throughout the contest, the Knights outshot the Patriots 12-10. Georgia Martell and Laura Vogt combined for a complete game shutout, racking up a total of six saves. In the first half, Vogt blocked two Knights shots, one in the 10' and another in the 40'. Martell came in relief during the second half where she made four saves. The keeper kept the game tied after a clutch catch in the 88th minute.

Cumberlands had a well-balanced offensive presence as seven different players made goal attempts. Taylor Bouma and Aguye Cots led the offense with two shots on goal. Thirteen minutes into the game, Bouma made a hard, left-footed goal attempt from the 18-yard marker towards the left side of the goal, but it was snagged by the diving Marian keeper. In the 51' minute Aguye Cots launched the ball from right outside the 18-yard box but the Marian goalkeeper was able to make a high save.

Neither team was able to find the golden goal, resulting in a 0-0 tie between the two top-ten schools. In 2019, the Pats lost against the Knights in a 2-0 battle but battled back in 2021 UC defeated Marian 1-0 in Williamsburg. The record between the two teams is now 1-1-1 and every game has been within two goals.

The Patriots will be back in action for their second top-10 matchup on Aug 26 against #3 Central Methodist. Kickoff is set for 3 PM in Fayette, MO.
